1951 Farmall M wheel rim color

I thought I read somewhere that cream or gray on wheel trims could be used and considered correct??

Also - when did they start painting the front grill white??

ps: Real question is if I have a 1951 MCH that is totally red - anything I can change to give it a little color and still be considered ok??

As you can see in this picture the 300-400series in the front are red grill and the 50 series in the back are white grill.

I finished a 51 M in May and used Massey Ferguson gray on the ffront and back rims, gave it black starter and generator and nuts on the wheels. With the yellow decals itis a standout at the shows I have exhibited at.

The factory red paint with fresh decals and a fresh emblem on the grille like mentioned, along with the silver(galvanized) rims looks pretty darn sharp. You can also probably get by without getting any flak with a chrome exhaust stack for a bit more "color" if your ears can stand it.

To answer your question of "when" they started painting the grilles white- on M's it was "never", at least from the factory. When the 50 series came out in, what, '56 or so, lots of dealers and individual owners painted their older M grille's white so that they'd look more "modern".

Like mentioned below, it's yours and if you wanna paint it like a 450, go for it. Heck, even give it a red and black paint job like the newer Case-IH's if you want....that might be kinda neat. Paint it however you'd like(but please, try to resist the temptation to paint it green with yellow rims and decals!!!).

I use what is commonly called jew chrome in my area. Its a sliver paint that almost looks like chrome, but after a year or so it fades some and looks real good

The wheel rims were galvanized...

no way cream...gray is close....

Try to match, galvanize ..I use aluminum,after it ages a while it looks great.....

Front grills and side of hood on the fifty series like 350 - 450 on up....were white...

any color is OK, the tractor belongs to you....
but I hope you just paint it red with aluminum
rims front and back.....

I used the "Silver" color paint from your local Case-IH dealer for the rims. May not be technically correct but close and looks good. M's never had a white grill. I purchased a shiny new "Farmall" emblem for the front and it sure improved the looks.
