Head Gasket Problem

A while back, I posted that I thought my Super C was leaking antifreeze from a rear "freeze plug".
Well, I started to disassemble the old thing and drained the oil. There was some antifreeze in the oil. I pulled the oil pan and there was antifreeze dripping from all the bottoms of the sleeves. My question is, when the tractor was running, water would start leaking from the head gasket on the distributor side, so would it be safe to assume that the head gasket is the culprit and I wont need to split the tractor for the freeze plug? Thanks Patrick

I had never overhauled an engine either until the first time. You just need to take it one step at a time, & if possible take a few pictures along the way. This is a good tractor to start mechanicing on. Follow Jim's advice on getting sleeves & pistons back in & you'll be OK.

Ok, I have never rebuilt an engine before and am quite intimidated by it. Am I getting in over my head or do I just need to realize that this would be a great learning experience for me and I need to take it very slow and do the full job. I am afraid of screwing up something. Patrick

I take being a mechanic by trade for granted,so I don't know what it feels like to be intimidated by an engine, since I do then for a living. My advice to you is to invest in a service manual for your Super C.iT WILL OUTLINE HOW TO PERFORM AN OVERHAUL,STEP-BY -STEP.If you can't find an original IH manual, buy one in reproduction, but I suggest using the IH manual, the instructions are more clear, and pertain to the model of your tractor only.

If you are unsure, stop and ask questions. The information is out there, this forum is proof of that.My 5cents worth, good luck!

If the core plug (they really aren't freeze plugs, they are used to get the sand out of the casting after the iron cools) in the back of the block is leaking (Antifreeze coming out of the bell housing) there is no other way to fix it than a split. Your C is leaking in two places for sure, The "O" rings at the bottom of the cylinder wet sleeves are toast, and need to be replaced (requiring the complete disassembly of the rod to crank connection, removal of the pistons and pulling of the sleeves. This is not hard in a wet sleeve engine, just wooden block kind of thing. If it has hours, why not put in a engine kit. At about $800 for all stuff including fluids and materials, it would go a long way towards great tractor. If the rear core plug is leaking, it needs to be pulled. At that point doing the mains and a new rear seal is the ticket. If it has low hours, or you are budgeted to just fix it minimally, and the core plug is OK, just "O" rings and gaskets might do. Lube the "O" rings with silicon grease, or dish detergent when installing the cleaned up sleeves. Be sure to put things back in the same hole, and in the same rotational location, and the pistons facing the way they were. The manual is mandatory for specs and process. Good luck JimN
