Hi on my farmall A when it's running it smokes blue and blows some oil from the exhaust. I'm thinking it's the rings, and i want to put new pistons and sleeves in. Just want to know what I should put in to make it have alittle more power?

Might as well take the head in and get it milled, & boiled out too. Have some new seats put in, some new valves, guides & maybe springs. Have them grind a new contour on the rockers where they contact the valve stem if it needs it. Since the pan's off, might stick in a new set of rod bearings. I did all this plus new mains on mine last year. I also put a new gasket in the oil pump, and hosed out some sludge that had accumulated in the block.

Yes tyler By putting The larger pistons and sleeves you will be making her into a SA. And they are actually easier to get and about the same pice as the stock size. If in the future you would like a price from me On my parts just yell hey Magman. JON

Magman, that is just not accurate. Pistons and sleeves will NOT make an A into a Super A. The Super A had the exact same 3 inch piston X 4 inch stroke that an A had. 113 cubic inches.

I AM SORRY, I did not mean that thats all it took to make a SA I know there is more involved in a super than just pistons. I was just saying about making it from a 113 to a 123. you can do that with the pistons and sleeves cant ya. JON

Well what I just said would be wrong also. Wow I might as well quit while I am behind. OK this is what I am talikng about going to the 3 -1/8" piston. And getting more power there I know that one is right. LOL or it better be.and what was a SA 123 stock 1-1/4" bore? actually i am trying to figure out what fits in all those motors right now becuase I got a guy thats asking about it. I take it that a stock SA 123 sleeve will not fit in a Stock 113 block? JON

Jon,
What Red Dave is trying to tell you is that the Super A had the exact same 113 ci engine with 3" cylinders that the A had.

Actually, part way through Super A production they changed. Later Super A engines used the 123 block with sleeves that matched the outside profile of the 123 sleeves but still had a 3" bore.

It certainly sounds like you have a problem, but I'd suggest a compression test to confirm it before you sink a lot of dollars into it.

For a Farmall A, you can put 3-1/8 pistons and sleeves in it. That is 1/8 inch oversize. You can also get those in a high compression (stepped head) piston. The IH brand name for them is Fire Craters (if I remember right). Several other manufacturers have their own version of them.

I used Clevite 3-1/8, stepped head pistons in my B (same engine) with good results.

Red Dave, Do you remember how tall the dome was on the step head pistons you used? Was it taller then 1/4"? How high is the compression? Charles

The dome on mine are about 3/8 inch high.

does all this require splitting the A and removing the crank? I have removed and had the head and valves all redone in the local shop and now must get the pistons and sleeves out. I have been told that I have to split the tractor to get the crankshaft out to be checked.

I guess you could get the pistons and sleeves out without removing the crank, but that would be an awful lot of work to go to just to do a half-assed job. How would you know if the rod & main bearings fit?

Yes, you have to split the tractor to get the crankshaft out. Splitting one of these is not too hard to do though.
