I was wondering if anyone could tell me what differences if any there are between the 282 cubic inch Diesel that was used in the 706 Farmall versus the one used in the 560 Farmall. They look like the exact same engine on the outside. Were there any internal differences. Thanks in advance. Phil

Don't I also hear about larger valves in later 282's?

There were a few changes made from the time that engine came out in the 560 until it was last used in the 656, although I don't know right off the top of my head when each change occured. Somtime during the production of the 560, the injectors were changed. Later, possibly during the 706's, the wrist pins were made quite a bit bigger.

Phil: Pump settings and governed speed setting were the main difference. 560 was governed at 2000 rpm with 540 pto at 1800. 706 was goverend around 2400 with 540 pto at 2300. Probably those extra rpm's gave the added hp. There were a couple of changes before the days of 706 and 656, I've forgotten exactly what but think it was in the head.

The 660 was tuned like a 706. It ran at 2400 and developed 80 HP. It required a bigger radiator and a six bladed fan vs five for the 560.

I believe the most major difference between the two engines is the setting on the injector pump.
