I have an International 1466 Tractor with the following problem. This tractor doesn't start unless I put a little has in the intake. Once it starts engine runs real smooth, has plenty of power and burns no oil. Placed new starter along with new batteries and still it continues to do this. Any suggestions would truly be appreciated, it a pain putting a squirt of gas every time I want to start it.

Could there be a tiny fuel line or return leak? Before you crank it much in the morning, bleed the front filter-then see if she starts quick. Just a thought.

It sounds like a compression problem. While you have the injectors out have them check while your there. It is not that expensive to do a comp check and it will take the guessing out of it.

While I know the feeling, come on buddy, let's keep it clean. This is a family board.

Do you get white smoke when cranking it while it does not start? The injection pump has an oil pressure operated overfuleing device. If it sticks in the run position, will be very hard to start. Can usually be freed up. Is located under the top cover on the pump. Just something that can cause your problem.

With out being there myself i can't give ya a deffient on this , it could be low cranking pressure in the fuel pump and this will need a rebuild to fix or like mike said could be dirty injectors . ATF is good but Lucas fuel treatment is SOOooo much better . Just for Shutts and giggels i put a pint in the 806 as i know my injectors are were getting bad and i jst figured that when i do the rebuild on her that i would do a total rebuild on everything from the radator cap to the PTO . Well when we were getting everything ready to chop corn I put a pint in with a full tank of fuel and we use the 806 for the haul tractor as we were haulen silage wagons about a mile and a half each way, well after the third wagon that anoyen miss that i had at around 26-2800 is GONE runs Sooooo much better . Tomarrow she will need and nother feeding from the fuel tank and she is getting one more pint added .

Vet,

Just for fun, next time use a quart and a half of dextron ATF to a full tank.

Takes about 20 minutes to clean 'em up. :>)

All ready did that and that did not get the job done , but the lucas did it in no time . I was usen it in the big truck because the boss said to and i would put a half gallon in every time i fed it . Then when i was working for my buddy last summer the Freightliner that he had to pull lowboy with had a 525 N 14 cummins in it and i had and injector stick one day and it had to go into cummins for rplacement and and old friend up at Cummins told me to start running it in it well after the Littel expence of that injector and the labor it was a couple days before i had to feed that truck as i did not put a bunch of miles moving eqipment and one more injector started to hang while i was heading up to get fuel i bough a gallon and dumped half in while fuleing and the engine was missen pretty good i was just going to run it on over the 7 miles to cummins and spend another grad of the bosses money and while i was driven over there the miss came out of it . So while we were getting all the lites and wireing supplys to lite up the silage boxes i happend to see that they had Lucas and figured that i have waisted 20 buck before what the heck and brought a gallon home put some in the 1066 the 806 and the old 720 and Eugenes Dodge , the 806 is the one that showes the improvement .

Dunno,

If it runs fine after ya get it started, I think the pump/fuel system is probably okay.

This "hard starting" symptom is a classic diesel trait. I'd be fer havin' the big boys take a peek at that compression; sure sounds like it is getting weak to me.

Is it maybe time for an engine in this guy?

Good luck,

Allan

Clogged injectors will make a hard start, once running a tractor will seem to run fine. the injector slobbers in the fuel instead of misting it in and so start up is hard. Once the engine is warmed up the tractor will run fine on "slobbered in fuel" as opposed to misted fuel. There are injector cleaners that you can add to the fuel that will clean them , will take a few tanks of fuel to do it. You can remove the injectors and manually clean them,I have had good success with the injector cleaner additive...made my tractor go from having to start it with ether in summer weather to starting on its own with just the glow plugs in winter conditions, a differeence like night and day...good luck, incidentally a friend who was an AC dealer for forty years says to put a quart of automatic transmission fluid into a tank of diesel fuel, it lubes the pump and removes moisture from the fuel tank...Mike in Exeter Ontario
