424 Distributor

When I bought my 424 gasser it already had a pertronix ignition installed,had to replace it once,now it's going out again.. can anybody tell me what other models would use the same,or real similiar distributor..or where I might find one,I'd like to change it back to points and be done with it,but I need all the internals..

IMPORTANT....

Do you actually HAVE an external ballast resistor installed?

If not, and this is simple a Pertronix module (most likely), and NOT an Ignitor II, the lack of a ballast resistor will cause too much rimary ignition current to flow, heating up the coil and the Pertronix, until one, or both fail.

I'm not sure about the 424, but on the automotive units you can just remove the unit and put the points and rotor back in because the distributor plate isn't modified for the Pertronix.

What's "going out"... the distributor bushings or advance, or the Pertronix unit????

I've never seen a Pertronix unit that's "going out". They DO fail once in a while, but typically, it's all at once.

What's your's doing?

If it is the Pertronix unit, you may be using a coil with primary resistance that is too low.

The "Ignitor II" units can handle low resistance coils, but the original Pertronix units can't, without the use of a ballast resistor.

That darned Pertronix Unit.. what it does is after it gets fully warmed up,20 or 30 minutes of workin,it develops a stutter,kind of a random miss..I've done plugs wires,new coil,rebuilt carb,new fuel lines,filters,rebuilt carb and cleaned gas tank..no change I gave up and bought a new Pertronix,problem solved...for about 8 or 9 months..now my stutter is back,sounds just like before..I'd appreciate any ideas and my email is open..

Do you know the part # of the Pertronix?

This will tell us for sure if it is an original type, or a Ignitor II.

Have you set the gap between the magnet wheel and the module... the closer, the better, so long as the parts don't touch and rub.

Do you happen to know the make and part # of the coil, and have you ever changed it out?/

I bought the Pertronix thru this sites part store,can't remember which one it is..went and looked at the coil,it's a year old NAPA 12V coil,says "external resistance required" on the side.. I don't recall actually setting the gap when I put this one in,think I just bolted it in.. I'll try closing that gap and see if that makes a difference..

Sounds like you need a coil with an internal resistor. My 444/2444 has no external coil resistor.
