my M uses alot of oil but also seems to have lots of power. i have not done a compression test yet but i have two plugs that do foul from oil and i'm wondering if valve seals could be the problem, but i'm not sure what type of seals are uses on an M. i should go through the motor but dont have time, just wanna try to get it to use less oil for a bit. any suggestions?
thanks
Gary

Try putting some HD30 Oil in. I tried multivis oil and had the same problem. Went back to 30 and only use a qt. all summer

right now i run rotella 15w-40. when i notice the most smoke is if i take off from a stop it really puffs and if i start pulling it hard it will smoke some, not much but you can see it comeing out of the muffler. was hoping to get by without a total rebuild but if i have to i have to.

Worn valve guides/valve seals will usually cause an engine to smoke only for a few seconds after start-up and will usually not let enough oil into the combustion chamber to result in fouled plugs. Sorry to say it but I think the 'ol gal is in need of a total rebuild-- sleeves/pistons and rework the head. You might get by with a re-ring job and grind the valves, but that would be a short-term, band-aid solution, and you will be doing it over again in a couple of years or less.

I reringed my mower M about fifteen years ago. It was fouling out the plugs. Since oil in the cylinders brought the compression up during compression test I didn't touch the head.

I mean really didn't touch it. When I got it back together and started it, I was sick, still missing and running rough. Then I changed out the old fouled plugs and it has been great ever since. I put at least 800 to 1,000 hours on this tractor every year. It is the one the points spring broke on last week. It is using a little oil now, but not yet fouling the plugs.

My belief:

Modern oil, slow speed, last forever. The head has still not been worked and the old pistons and sleeves are still holding. I'm sure the partial rebuild has 10,000 hours on it.

I like Band-Aids
