My sister works for a bank. The latest scam is that someone calls you. They identify themslves as being with your cards Fraud and Security Dept. They have noticed a purchase that they don't think you have made. You verify that you did not make that purchase. They already have your card number and never ask you to verify it. They do want you to verify the number that is on the back of the card to verify to them that you are indeed the person who is the card holder. If you get a call like this be sure to to very careful and to follow it up with a return call to the Number on the back of your card for the real Fraud dept.

Good info to have.

I like to check my accounts online at least once a week to be sure someone hasn't stolen my number and used any of my cards.

I got that call a couple of weeks ago, it was a recorded message, thought it was a scam and ignored it. Then received a call from a live person -- he told me to call the number on the back of the card. I did, it was legitimate, card company blocked the card, then cancelled it, I have a new card. Any doubt about this, call the card company, but don't give any info to the person who calls you. How the card company found out the charges were not mine I don't know, probably because one was $600 for a cash advance from American Express (AE is not my card company) and I have no history of that type of thing. I do not know, but I am 99% sure they were internet transactions where someone broke into the companies system. The card companies WILL call you if they suspect something, but never give info to the person calling.

Ditto, me too.
I've had various credit card banks call me several times - sometimes it was my using the card in an unusal way that they checked on, sometimes it was somebody else and they cancelled and sent a new one, at least once they called to say they knew it was somebody else and would send a new card.
A couple of years ago my sister got a call asking about one of her husband's cards. He was in the Middle East and used it. The bank asked her if it was ok, she told them yes, and then asked them what if he had been single and there had been no one home to ask. Oddly, they had no answer. Guess it had never come up.

And, oh yeah. Just last year I was in a long checkout line at Walmart. Full buggy. Put the debit card in the slot and it says,"No, thanks." Several tries, it says "Insufficeint funds," everybody behind me muttering "Deadbeat." Finally use another card.
Get home, call bank. They say some one who said she was my girl friend had called asking about my Visa account, they were suspicious and put a hold on it. That card is the overdraft protection on my checking account so not only was Walmart an embarrassment, but there were overdraft fees on three checks. My apoplexy was relieved only when they made it all whole.
