I have a 274 diesel that has been sitting for 9+ months. The battery seems OK but it won't turn over. I don't have a clue where to start since I don't know much about diesels. Any suggestions?

The tractor has to be in neutral and the clutch must be pushed all the way in before the starter will turn. There is a safety switch that is closed when the clutch is depressed.

Yeah, I wondered if the safety switch might be stuck or dead. Do you know where it is located (until the manual I bought here arrives)?

I do not know where it is, but I would suggest you follow the clutch pedal linkage and you might see it. I have had one of these for almost 20 years. Some on this board do not care for them, but mine has performed well. It will run a long time on 5 gallons of fuel. I have not used it as much the last couple of years because of less tobacco farming. I really like it for cultivating. The one complaint I have always had about it is there is no down pressure on the rear cultivators like on the super As , 100s, 130s, and 140s. It is much easier to steer in really loose soil than the others. I still use it in the gardens and for other light jobs. I would get a finish mower for it if I could find an exceptional buy on one. My most major repair was to replace the water pump. I have let mine set for months mostly during the winter. I have not had any problems starting it as long as the battery was well charged. I would also suggest that you check all battery cable connections if you haven't done so. I have had 2 tractors to not crank in thew last week because of poor connections. One was at the battery and one was at the starter. Good luck with it.

Hi RO,

Since it's been setting for a long time, turn the crank by hand first.

If the crank won't turn, then pull the glow plugs or injectors out then try to turn it by hand.

You may have a hydro-locked engine from either anti-freeze or diesel setting on top of the pistons. If you forced the crank to turn with it being hydro-locked you will bend the rods, push rods or???

Buy the manuals. This website sells orginal IH copies. Look on the left side of the screen at the very top. I like these manuals more than I like the "IT" manuals. Ya there more expensive but they contain more info.

Thanks for the advice. I will try those things. I"ve ordered the manual. The tractor sits outside under a shed, so it is somewhat protected from the weather.

PS - The side dressing fertilizer attachment was missing when I bought the tractor, so if you know of a source for that, I"d be grateful.

If it is free to be rolled back and forth, Put it into high (road) gear, and push violently back and forth on the top of one of the rear wheels. Watch the fan while this is taking place, if it moves a bit with the wheels, it is probably not terribly stuck. If the exhaust was open to the rain, it can get ruined in that time. If it moves some, try to bump it in the forward direction far enough to make at least one revolution. Then with a good battery, try to start it. Good luck, JimN

Check your battery cables. Make sure you have voltage to your starter. sometimes they gunk up with corrosion after setting for a while.
