look at the gas tank, the 450 has an inverted hump on the bottem of the tank so it holds more gas. The story I got was the 400 would not make it to noon without refueling so IH added the bigger tank on the 450.

The steering wheel on the 400 is interchangeable with earlier tractors. The cowl has some differences too. I think there are holes in the 450 to select double or single acting hydraulic valve operation.

The most obvious difference is in the fast hitch if it has one. Notwithstanding that, the 400's have a machined flat spot on the left side rear of the frame lid. It is next to the battery box.

There is a small difference in the rear steering support on the 450. There is a small 1/4" horizontal hole there but I can't remember what it is for.

Anyway check all the casting codes. There has to be at least a dozen of them. I am guessing the last digit would be Z,A,B,C,D corresponding to the years 1954 TO 1958.

400 was red, 450 was red and white, but could have been repainted. So, assuming it has the original engine, 400 will have cast in letters near the rear of the block that say C264, 450 will say C281. There are likely other small differences, but I'm not that familiar with either one.

if it has the original block in it a 400 would be a c-264 and a 450 would have a c-281.
