Attending the 150th Vernon County Fair and on display is a Farmall 240 w/tricycle wheel that was purchased in Texas. Blue ribbon went to a beautifully restored JD H. Dad had one we used for tobacco. He got a blue ribbon on his hand-lettered "Dutchman Plows" sign, along w/ other ribbons. I took a self-portrait walking to an outhouse in my pin-stripped bibs and placed second in "rural life" competition. Eating great "fair food" and most of the time it is being consumed at the 4-H stand. Last evening a transformer went out and the grounds were dark except for the midway being powered by their own generator. An announcement was made asking people to be patient and stating that 150 years ago there wasn"t electricity on the grounds either! Visiting with folks seen only once-a-year at the fair. Miss being at the fair with my late girlfriend. Taking dad out to the fairgrounds for breaksfast now. Great cherry and apple pie. Life is short, eat desert first! Hope you folks are enjoying your day.

I had a good time at the fair. Dad and I enjoyed a breakfast at the Lions Club food stand - he was president about 30 years ago. Ate pie, batter-fried cheese curds from the local creamery, mini-donuts, more pie, home made chili at the 4-H stand and purchased a whole cherry and apple pie at the end of the day for $12 at the stand. The antique agricultural exhibit numbers continue to increase at the fair. Hand tools, cream seperator and fanning mill to toy equipment and full-size tractors - all housed in a tile building built in 1903-04. Reroofed a few years ago and a blacktop floor installed. Saw a pyramid 10 Belgian horse hitch being lined up and pulling a wagon. Our native county son - Orion Samuelson [WGN and RFD TV] addressed the grandstand crowd and then harness racing. A ride on a 70 foot ferris wheel all intermingled with fair food. Some drizzle in mid-day, but otherwise great weather. Sorry to hear some no longer have a county fair. Feel fortunate that ours in continually ranked among the top seven in the State of Wisconsin. A very good fair board and many volunteers. Donated to the fair as they are looking to build a large commercial building next year and eliminate tent rental and include more restroooms. Our grounds a maintained year-round and look great. A true "harvest" fair with flowers, fruits and garden produce along with crops that are harvested at their peak. Great loyal crowds and, did I mention food! Already looking forward to next year, just 360 days away. Always begins with entry day the second Wednesday after Labor Day. The 151st in 2007. Web address is www.vernoncountyfair.com Looking forward to sharing the homemade cherry and apple pies with dad - he is too. Hope you folks enjoyed your day.

Al,

The Vernon County Fair sounds wonderful. Out here in California, the "rural" aspect of our county fair is quickly eroding away. The fairgrounds manager seems to have little interest in the agricultural beginnings of our fair. There were NO tractors shown by anyone, and there was little emphasis on entries of any kind (crops, food, canning, etc.). It appears that unless you are a vendor selling the usual fair crap or you have a race car to run circles around on the race tract, you need not apply!

The really upsetting thing is that he wants all the antique tractors, wagons, engines, and related farm equipment off the grounds. Our local Historical Society is trying to find a home to store these items before they disappear.

I'm heading to the Tulare County fair today. I'm hoping there will be a good tractor showing, considering the enormity of the Tulare Internation Ag show. But we'll see. I went to the State Fair in Sacramento over Labor Day weekend. Very very disappointing with respects to tractors. I was told they couldn't afford to hire them in anymore.

The Indiana State Fair had their 150th fair last month, with their 3rd largest crowd ever. I didn't see it but they had 92 antique tractors (1 for every county) parade from Monument Circle in the middle of Indianapolis out to the State Fair grounds. Over at the Pioneer Village (NE corner of the fairgrounds) there was a large exhibit of antique tractors and some other equipment, including steam engines, threshing machines, and a sawmill. Our governor plans on agriculture to revitalize Indiana and the state is spending some money toward that goal. There was a John Deere dealer and a Case-IH dealer set up showing smaller tractors and selling shirts and toys.

Our county fair is built around 4-H and is fairly small. We used to have a separate county fair but the organizers quit when the preachers objected to the gambling and girly shows. So all we have now is 4-H exhibits, livestock, demolition derby, and a small midway.

Al, those wonderful days are memories for most of us. This year there is no Fall Fair in Exeter Ontario, the first time in 153 years that there is no Fair. There were not enough people interested in helping set it up and operating it. Committees grew old and no new people were replacing them, a few deaths of our seniors who promoted the Fair and whammo...the fair is cancelled..I hope by next year we can get it going but the interest has waned for several years...keep those memories of you and you family at the Fair...Mike in Exeter Ontario
