I tried to do a search for information before I posted questions on this tractor, cannot get the search feature to work so here goes. I am needing a tractor to pull a 5' rotary cutter mostly clipping 20 acres of pasture, found a IH 424 diesel, bad faded paint very straight sheetmetal, has some blow-by , had to crank on it for about 15 seconds quite a bit of white/grey smoke when cranking before it started. After it warmed up a little dark smoke and still some blow-by. Owner said it does not have power steering, steering wheel says it does if so it does not work. Are parts available for this? He is asking $1900 I think he might drop a couple of hundred. Any thoughts or comments on the 424 appreciated.
Thanks,
Rick

Ihave a 424 gas that I really like with the exception of lack of power steering. Mine has 3 pt and 2 stage pto. Itis a really good tractor with 6' hog in heavy stuff and I wouldn't hesitate to use a 7' hog in light stuff. considering that the tractor runs good enough to check everything out the price looks good considering the need for a rebuild on the engine.

Rick, I think Bob and myself are the 424's biggest fans, maybe we're the only ones on here that have one, don't know.. they really are a great little tractor though, mine is a gasser, pulls 6' brush hog with ease..mine has factory power steering too.. check for water in the oil like Bob said, then show us pics if you buy it..

Bob,does yours have a set of remotes on it? I'd love to see a pic of how those are hooked in if you ever get a chance..thats the one thing mine really needs..

Tim,

I just found your email. Hotmail threw it out as spam. I fixed that, and have your email address on file, and will send some photos and scans to you when things slow down a little around the shop.

Bob

Tim,

Mine has one "spool", and a pair of rear remotes. There were LOTS of available options with the hydraulics!

I will get you a photo when I get a chance, I also have a parts book, and could scan the applicable pages for you.

In between "killing time" on here,I'm trying to get some outside work done, before the COLD ND winter sets in. Since this thread will be PAGES back before I get back to you, just email me at bigcoulee@hotmail.com, and I will then have your contact information when I'm ready to send the parts breakdowns and the photos.

Hello Bob Thanks for the reply and picture, The 424 I am looking at has the same steering linkage your tractor has, maybe someone changed the steering wheel in the past. Has 3 point, PTO, not sure about live power. I did not get to put any weight on the lift, it seemed to work OK. The owner is saying it does not burn oil, the blow-by is telling me otherwise or is some blow-by normal with these??? It has enought blow-by to put a wet ring on the hood below the vent tube., the present owner apparently took the tractor on a trade. Looking at the little things, rubber boot pieces, pedal springs, wear on pedals and footrests I suspect it may be a pretty low hour tractor that has sat outside for quite a few years. Hour meter does not work, dash lights do. Front end is tight, transmission shifts out good. The thing that is getting my attention is the perfect sheetmetal. With a possible overhaul and paint it would be a good little tractor I think. I just had no idea about parts availability for it.
Thanks,
Rick

It's hard to say about the blowby... it could be as simple as sticky rings that will loosen up with use, or maybe the addition of some "snake oil", such as MMO might help, or it could be OH time.

Mine doesn't seem to have much blowby.

After it has sat without running at least overnight, loosen the engine oil drain a bit, and see if any coolant that has settled to the bottom drips out before the oil begins to drip out. This could indicate a bad head gasket, or a cracked block or cylinder head.

It sure is a SNAPPY little engine, with a quick governor, and good power.

I have a 424 diesel, and it's a WONDERFUL little tractor.

It will pull the 5' rotary cutter with EASE, as it has almost twice the HP of the little Ford "N"'s lots of folks use to pull similar cutters.

They are a cold-blooded diesel, and, for good starting, you need to use the glow plugs before cranking it, and, of course, the glow plug system needs to be in good working order.

If it HAS factory power steering, there will be hydraulic steering cylinders mounted to the front axle.

If it does NOT have factory power steering, there will be a long steering shaft, with a shaft with lots of "U" joints running from the steering column, under the LH side of the fuel tank, and past the lower left side of the engine, to the steering gear, centered over the front axle.

Mine has aftermarket Char-lynn power steering, with the "torque generator" mounted in the steeing shaft, under the front of the fuel tank.

I REALLY wish it had the factory power steering! (Anybody that knows of such a setup for sale reasonably, please let me know!)

Third Party Image

You can see the steering shaft and torque generator in the photo.

Mine has the live PTO option, with the 2-stage clutch, and a 3-point hitch. Does the one you are looking at have those options?

So far, the common parts I have needed have been readily available through CNH.

Incidently, apparently Mahindra of India, formerly associated with IH, is still making this same basic tractor, although I think the engine is different.

When I ordered a PTO lever and some other parts through the CNH dealer, the parts came marked "Made in India", and painted some weird creamy brown color, boxed in CNH boxes!

Re subject. You mentioned buying parts for your tractor from CNH. I need parts now for my 424D.
How do I contact CNH. Thanks a bunch. Bob Farrell

I was referring to my nearby CaseNewHolland or CaseIH dealer, depending upon how you look at their corporate structure!

If you don't know where your nearest dealer is, click the dealer locator link below.

You will be surprised what they can still order for the old machines!

Thanks. I really feel stupid! Didn't make the connection. I'm new to the forum (not the world) and have other stupid questions to ask later. Thanks again.

If you have any other 424 questions, feel free to email me. Also, I have the parts book, and can get you some part #'s to run by the dealer, or email you a scan of the page of the parts you're working with.

I have a 424 diesel. It is a great little machine, with plenty of very responsive power. The govener is really quick. I run a seven foot bush hog over pasture weeds with no problem. The high/low transmission feature allows you a maximum ground speed while maintaining lots of power at the hog. Mine is very fuel efficient. I love mine. Have a neighbor that has one without power steering and it's a brute to drive. good luck

I have the 444/2444. Nice one finger hydrostatic power steering :) Gasser though and a few more CU inch engine than the 424 I think. Good little tractor.
