I am sure this topic has ben covered a lot but i can't readily find the information. My big Farmalls with narrow fronts all shake when I am on the road. I would like to take them on a tractor ride but I can't stand to put up with the fighting the steering wheel. What do I need to do to fix it?

My H had this problem. To solve it I tightened the castle nut in front of the worm gear in the steering box.Turn the front wheels all the way to the left or right before you tighten the nut.

The tire pressure is a good idea and make sure the tires match.

There is also a possibility that the front wheel bearings need tightened up a little. Remove dust covers on front wheels(3 bolts), remove cotter pin, tighten nut until the front wheel won't turn by hand, then back the nut up a little so that the tire will turn by hand. Replace cotter pin and dust cover. Also a possibility that those bearings are about shot and need to be replaced.

I learned this trick from an old neighbor of mine and it sure works for me. He put a shock absorber on the fixture that steered the cultvator. I didn't have that on my 400 so I put in along side and under the frame rail, and hooked it to the front of the bolster above the wheels, it took a little trying to get it to work but I managed and man does it keep the wheels from beating me up while I'm running from pasture to pasture to feed hay.

On M's and h's, it's usually the steering bushings for the vertical shaft. Also check the gears. Easy to fix and not too costly.

One of my friends who ran Farmall all his life said the easiest way if you don't want to get into a lot of work is to let about 5 lbs. ofair out o f one of the tires in front. Will cause enough drag on that side to keeep it from shaking. Ptherwise, The gears are probably worn, keyway worn, bearings could be loose on steering shaft and can be tightened, and the bolster bearings do wear. Can be fixed, but may cost a bit.

I drove my 51 M almost 30 miles a couple of weeks ago and by reducing the air by 5 lbs on the left front tire is solved the shaking problem. It works!!!!
