International Harvester Roadgrader - color? Origin

I am trying to find out what color the International Harvester Roadgrader was.

I have found some yellow and some red. I think they are M's converted somehow or something.

Could anyone tell me what the original color is?

Do you have a pic of one please?

There's one up the road at the College
They use it every year. Doesn't look like it's ever been painted since new, and its red

There are pics of graders in stuck and troubled to the left. Select Farmalls and go through several pages 5 or so to find them. JimN

During the 40's and early 50's orange was more common on construction equipment than yellow. Most likely most were orange from the conversion factory. Could have also have been yellow or red (or any other color the manufacturer chose). If I were guessing I would think ist orange, 2nd most likely red, and third most likely yellow.

During this era, the four major builders of full size construction type motor graders were; Adams, Allis Chalmers, Caterpillar, and Gallion. Their standard colors were; Adams/orange, Allis Chalmers/orange, Caterpillar/yellow, and Gallion/orange. Industrial yellow was not yet the standard industrial color. Most highway departments also used orange. On a related note, school busses were also mostly orange rather than yellow. The conversion motor graders could be any color, just depending on manufacturer. In repainting an old conversion type motor grader, paint it any color you like and you will not be wrong.

There were 2 at Red Power. Owned by Bill and Jean Dunn Traverse City, Michigan. I may be wrong I think was was M the other H. The conversion was done by Meli-Blumberg in New Holstein, Wisconsin, at least one was marked 1946. One was marked Power Grader the other Maintainer. I Have some decent pictures but camera does not connect to the puter. Hope this helps some. Oh, these were Red. I am not sure if this was the original.

Some tractors were converted to road grader use with extended frame rails and attachments to provide adjustment of the mid mounted blade (just in front of the radiator) Other companies made graders and put Power units in them. My MD manual shows powerunits with folded under transmission systems and axle shafts ready for grader use. Other companies made all but the powerplant, and purchased IH engines only. They arn't real rare, but not too many have been restored. Ih would paint any color the customer asked for, and many were yellow, for highway visibility. JimN

Well from what I know about them they where an after market thing made for the M tractors so the tractor would have been painted red but then when the grader was put on they painted most of them yellow. So yes you would find both colors on one since it was not made that way by IH
