Spark plugs will cause the problem you describe. try a new set of autolite 388 spark plugs and see if anything changes.

Let me complicate things a bit. Your carburetor may be just fine. The symptoms you describe can also be caused by a weak ignition coil, improper ignition timing(too slow), or leaking intake manifold gaskets. One more thing to consider, these old Farmalls will all exhibit those same symptoms if the engine is not yet warmed up.

OLD is right there. Also turn the air idle mix screw out a half turn. See if that helps. Other than that you might just end up do the old rebuild bit. Too many things can be wrong with these old toys. Jeffcat

How will leaning out the idle circuit help? It should be disabled if the throttle plate is open.

Most likely that the carb is set to lean or the carb/fuel system is clogged up some place. What happens if you choke it when it starts doing that?? If chokeing it helps then your problem is most likely in the fuel system

Pulling the choke does help the sputter. I have tried to richen it up, but it does not seem to make a difference. Read

Pull the main jet adjusting screww out. You should get a good steady flow of gas when you do. If you don't then your mainjet is clogged up. Also some times you can turn off the gas, then spray carb cleaner in to the main jet and clear things up. Make sure you have the drain plug out when you spray the carb cleaner in so the stuff that has it clogged can fall out the bottom
