Tractor will not run very long

Russ and cowman.
I finished rebuilding the carburetor on my T20. Installed new spark plugs(autolite). New plug wires, stainless steel. New fuel filters. Check the valve settings.
And I got it started without having to pull it.
Runs very well for about two minutes. It backfires and sputters then stops. If I let it sit for a minute, then prime it. It will start the first crank. Only to stop a couple minutes later. Before I rebuilt the carburetor. I had gas dripping out, of the carburetor. Now, I have none dripping.
Can I assume that I have a fuel flow problem?
The tractor sound great, when it is running. No missing or sputtering, until just before it quits.
If I use the choke when it sounds like it's quitting, it only backfires worse than quits.
When it is running if I put my hand over the air intake and block off the air. The tractor will backfire and quit.
Okay guys. Any suggestions.
Thanks a lot for all you have given me, it was a great help.

MERV: Now that you know it was a fuel filter problem, to have a filter in place, why not try one designed for a garden tractor, see if it works, if so, it's better than having none! and it'll only cost a couple of bucks!

Good news, the old tractor has been out there in the shop and running for about 30 minutes.
The new plugs, plug wires, and carburetor kit did the trick. It now starts on the second crank,
can't get too much beer drinking in when it starts like that. It was a fuel supply problem. I took the Napa fuel filter off, and it runs great. I love these old tractors, they may be frustrating from time to time, but they sure sounded good when they're running.
Tomorrow I'm going to hook up the hydraulics cylinders to the blade, and if all goes well. Tomorrow afternoon, I will be pushing some dirt.
This winter, I plan to repaint it. The gentleman I bought it from had it painted yellow like a caterpillar. She looks nice, but is not the right color.
THANKS A LOT FOR ALL THE HELP. I will keep you up-to-date. I will post some pictures later on after I get the old girl painted.
My next project is a 1950 John deere MC crawler that belong to my grandfather and has been sitting in the field for over 20 years. I will have to use the old T20 to pull it up to the shop.
I know you don't mention John deere on this site.
Or should I say, one of them green things.LOL

If that carburetor has a main jet adjusting screw,
it may need to be opened a few turns CCW. I would set those valves a little loose until you get it running. Hal

The valve setting of .020" should be good cold. I would open the main jet one more turn to see if that helps. Hal

I have no fuel pump. Fuel comes from the tank gravity feed. I'm also thinking, the fuel filter that was on the tractor itself was attached to the bottom of the tank. The glass bowl. That got broken, so I replaced it with a Napa in-line fuel filter with a shutoff valve. I'm thinking the filter from Napa is not allowing enough gravity feed fuel to the carburetor.
I think I'm going to take the fuel filter out, and run straight to the carburetor with shutoff valve only. The tank has just been cleaned out completely. So at this time I have no worries about garbage.
I will keep you updated.

merv, that is great news actually! i think you are right about the sputtering and dying. that sure sounds like running out of fuel. i forgot to ask before, does your's have a fuel pump? most did, but after some trouble a lot went to straight out of the tank on farm crawlers, i guess because they might not go uphill much and the tank is pretty low at the bottom, almost to low for gas to flow to the carb. when you choke it , you would think it pick up a little fuel, but the backfire makes me wonder. usually this is lean acting. check that fuel flow. thanks, russ

Russ. One good thing. I know, the tractor will start, without me putting a chain on it and hooking it to the southend of my new truck. With my wife driving.
I found that a couple cranks, a cold beer, few more cranks, another cold beer, and she will start. Of course too many cranking and cold beer rounds. I may not start.

fer sure, fer sure there merv on the cold ones. seems like my back gets stronger and not so stiff after a couple of tall ones for that cranking. we have some 15-30, 22-36 and w-40's around here that get darn hard to spin even with beer! those t-20's are such a neat little crawler, and yet they will pull a 2- bottom plow in this gumbo around here like nothing. and the seat is a real life saver out in the field compared to it's steel wheeled cousins. we have a td-35 that we use once in awhile and the bigger they get, the more they seem to jar you when they go over a ridge. russ
