I recetly converted a C to 12v. I wired it based on Bob Melville's Super M diagram because I am using the distributor from an H or M. Alternator shows good volts, but when I hit the kill switch, she keeps running. I have to pull the coil wire off to stop it. On the diagram it shows a warning light which I do not have, is this my problem? Thanks for any help.

I used a JIM-PAK rectifier, part # 1N4004-30. works fine. David.

THe Number is 1N5408 it is a part from an electronics store, not an IH part #. Other diodes will also work, even those from a junk alternator. THe diode must be installed so that current cannot travel toward the ignition from the alternator, just the other way. If you put it in wrong, it harms nothing, but it probably won't charge. JimN

And, here's a picture, so he can get the diode installed the right way, the first time!

Justin, yeppers. You need that warning lite or diode in line. You're getting feed back from the alternator to the ignition system.HTH

Any idea what kind of diode or light? A part number perhaps? Thanks for the help.

justin, anyway you need to figure this out, because you have constant power to your points and they can get burnt while the tractor is just sitting. does it have the same push/pull switch as an h & m? one lead wire from the starter or solenoid should go to this switch hot and then the other to the distributor. that should be all, but i have not worked on any late tractors, so if it has a key switch then you will have to trace it down. good luck.

Yes I have the push/pull switch, and only one wire goes to the coil. Once the motor/alternator stops, there is no juice going to the coil.
