There are about 7200 Farmall 340s and 11000-12000 340Us.

Personally i think they are a great tractor, our 340U has handled everything we have ever thrown at it. We use a 6ft snowblower on it for winter, a mower in the summer, and pull a 10 or 12ft disk with it every once in a while. The down pressure also comes in handy for blading.

My neighbor has one of those. When he was still actively farming he owned a collection of Ms, at least one super M, a couple of Hs, a 766, and the 340 rowcrop. The Hs and Ms were mostly toys, the 766 did the heavy tillage work and ran the big round baler, and the 340 did everything else without complaining.

I have never seen one, so you can take this with a few grains of salt. 340 replaced the 330, which was an temporary tractor based on the 350, produced until the 340 appeared. Could say it also replaced the 350 as the 340 started production in 1958, 350 ended production then. Thus it was made in roughly the same time frame as the 240/460/560, etc. Both 330 and 340 have C135's which is essentially a C123 with a larger bore and stroke. About 35? HP, same HP as the 350, which it definitely isn't. About 4500 lbs. Most IH tractors of that era had power steering, but it may have been an option. I suppose you could consider it a more "modern" tractor than the 00/50 series. It will have more sophisticated hydraulics. 340 utility sold many more than the Farmall version, and is probably more desirable. What's it worth? Dunno, if I was in the market for one, I might pay $3500 for it. Probably no better or worse, as to problems, than any othe IH tractor of that era.

Hey Old, I've got a 340 farmall myself that I like alot. They're about 35 hp and will handle a 6ft brush hog, 2 14 plow , i pull a 10 ft disk with mine but it struggles with it at times. Week point on mine is the steering, although the tractor doesn't seem to have that many hours on it the steering is real loose. Just a combination of alot of wear points as opposed to just one thing. Mines got a wide frontend live power TA, power steering, touch control on the quick hitch. I paid 2500$ for it in 1997. It's got all the sheet metal in good shape and all the emblems that is all hard to find. They only made about 8000 total in utility row crop and crawler. Hope this helps PUTTER

If the 340 steering is anything like the tractor that replaced it, the 504, then IH should be rebuked for continuing the design. The 504 steering has four U-joints and one is very high angle.

There were two power steering options. One put a Charlynn underneath the steering wheel and did not solve the problem. The other option was a fully hydrostatic system which should have been better and probably was. I doubt if that option was avalable on the 340 but I don't have a parts book and can't confirm.

I solved the steering problem on my 504 by installing the Charlynn at the bolster. That eliminates the high torque on the U-joints.

Does the 340 have down pressure on the fast-hitch? What about the 240 - down pressure? Thanks

I don't have the crawler numbers, but there were over 11000 utilities, and about 7200 row crops.
