Ok, so we're new to this. We just purchased what we thought was a 1957 Model A to work our little 10 acres, but it turned out to be a 1947. Our local tractor "guy" just about had a heart attack when he saw it and we told him we were using it on the place here - something about "... do you know what you have?" and "... it should be in a museum". It's a nice little tractor, in fabulous shape ... is there something we should know? Is it worth more than the $2k we paid for it?

I would like to that everyone that answered. We"re going to keep and use our "red bug". We"ll keep in mind the turn-over danger and be careful. Am trying to figure out how to download a photo for Vern. Thanks again!!

I think I saw that tractor for sale on ebay. I have the add with pictures. It didn't get a bid the first time. It started out at 1375 and it was for sale in Boise Idaho. IS this the same tractor? Ron

I have owned a 1947 Farmall A for over 30 years and wouldn't trade it. $2000 is about the advertised price, look in the adds on this site, especially if you get equipment with it. The only down side is all the implements have to be bolted on. I have a belly mower on it and now it is our lawnmower. That is the reason that I have not offered to help Allen with his plowing. I don't get to use it to much any more because my wife thinks cutting the grass is her job. Who am I to argue with her. That is why I bought her a set of new tires for her birthday last year and the mower deck for mothers day about ten years ago. I know I spoil her but she deserves to be spoiled. As far as turning over anything is dangerous if not used as it was intended to be used. Always pull from the drawbar and not the axle or other areas not intended for that purpose. You have a good tractor, use it and enjoy it. As far as being in a museum that is only his opinion, the tractor will be happier if it is being used.
Bill

Does anyone know if there are belly mowers available for the A Farmall and where I might get one?

Angie: One other thing you should know, since you are new to this - you can turn one over pretty easily and get hurt or killed - especially if you live in a hilly area. Even if you are on flat ground, be careful around ditch embankments, etc. Cross ditches squarely. Slow down to make turns when in 4th gear.
You may think you'll have time to jump clear, but you probably won't. mike

In my part of the country, "L.A." (Lower Alabama), $2,000 - $2,250 would be a fair price for a good SUPER A with hydraulics. Being a (non Super) A, would whack the value pretty good - maybe knock it down by as much as $800.

At first, you think the lack of hydraulics will not matter that much. But, after while, if you are using the tractor, you find yourself looking around for a Super A, 140 or an "N" series Ford. mike

Angie: Not sure your A should be in a museum. I don't think there are enough tractor museums across North America to hold 5% of the A's still running. There were close to 250,000 built and unlike Merlin's area I don't think an excessive number have gone to the scrap yard.

Value is going to depend a lot on your area, and the supply and demand at a given location. Farmall A and Super A tractors were a bit crop specific, thus the numbers sold in some areas was massive. In other areas probably very few. There could well have been dealers across the grain belt that never sold a Farmall A or SA.

Don't expect a museum to come calling, they probably already have one. Just use the tractor and enjoy.

Angie, I think most of the worth question can be determined by what part of the country it is in. Around where I live, they are as rare as hens teeth because people sent them the scrap yards years ago. The last one I owned a couple of years ago ran decent and didn't look too bad and I finally got $250.00 for it. "If" you could find one around here, it would probably be sitting up somewhere and you could get paid a few bucks to haul it off. That said, I know where there's an A that is in mint condition and don't look as if it is 2 years old yet that you couldn't get for $5000.00. I know, because I made the offer. So, being in fabulous shape, you probably got a good deal on you A. Use it and enjoy it.

Angie;

I have a '48 SA & love it. Unfortunately mine is a working tractor & would not place in any beauty contests.
They are great tractors for what they were made for. I live on 5 acres of trees so it does some log pulling, dirt moving etc.

If yours is in tip-top shape & pretty you got a good deal.
How 'bout a picture?

Vern
