Cheaper IH parts?.

Hello folks, I was wondering if I could possibly get a new "Multi Valve" for my IH 484 from an aftermarket vendor?. Local Case IH dealer wants $1,600 for a new one, and I don't have that kind of money right now. Allen in NE, if your reading this, it wasn't the pump after all, it is instead the multi valve uder the steering wheel, and it has about 20 outlets on it.

If your talking about the multi control valve it can be rebuilt unless your housing is busted . Had one done for $200 a few yrs. back .

I would also like to add to the original post, I looked into it more in my service manuals, the MCV is not located under the steering wheel like I had first thought, it is down on the left hand side of the rear axle housing.

Theres 2 of them listed, one is $1,595, which is the same exact price I was quoted, and the other is alittle more. Was there a higher capacity pump offered for the 84 series or what?, they give no descriptions.

Don't know -- I was just trying out Messick's site, which is new to most of us. Most IH tractors have optional pumps.

Not to sound pessimistic, but for such a specific part for such a specific application on a relatively low-production tractor... You're not likely to find anything aftermarket. Aftermarket generally deals in generic parts like seats, steering wheels, even internal engine parts... You know, things that fit on a multitude of tractors and are fairly simple to manufacture.

My suggestion is to try at least one other CaseIH dealer for the part. These guys may be adding a "surcharge." Then, when you find out that it's $1600 no matter where you go, you will just have to grit your teeth and break out the plastic if you want the tractor running again.

Just an FYI - almost none of the prices off our website have a surcharge on them. Most dealers do surcharge parts above MSRP. We do it only with the most inexpensive parts (ie, 0.32c o-rings - kinda hard to even pay for the time to take it out of the bin with a 0.05c profit margin).

I think they used the same pump on the entire 84 series, not just the 484 since this MCV is bolted onto the rearend housing, and I was told they used the same rearend for the entire series.

I was going to replace the gas tank on my 574 untill I learned a new one was 810.00, now it's going to get the sealer treatment.

OK, So I went to all places I know of. New here (Canada) is more than the States. I assume you are located in the states? I could get a used one, but: freight, not sure if it works, or how well, and exchange might all make if better to get new.

Yes, I am located in the U.S, I hear you on going with used and it may or may not be any good, and if I have them change it, it's going to cost me a pretty penny anyways. I think what I'll have to end up doing is leave it alone and try to use it as is for right now, I'll save up the rest of the money and get it done next spring. Won't hurt anything to continue using it as is will it?.

Yeah, they did some testing on it and found the problem, but they want $1,600 for that multi valve and if they install it, the total bill is going to be around $2,500. Ouch!.

Can you take it apart and clean it?

If you find out the problem is a bad o-ring or something simple, you might be glad you did not buy a new one.

But you have to try.

Or you may find out their diagnosis is wrong. (Yes, Elizabeth, it happens!) and you have another problem which may or may not be too bad.

Nothing like putting an expensive part on to find the problem is not really fixed after all.

They said they pulled out a valve or two and cleaned them, but it didn't do any good as sometimes that does the trick they said.

Hi Jon, I have forgotten what the original problem was? Was it the loss of pressure to the PTO clutch?

The MCV valve should be the same on 454,464,574,674,484,584,684,784,495,595,695.
There were two different hydraulic pumps, a 12.5 GPM on 684 and below and 784 and 884 had a 13 GPM pump.

The purpose of the MCV is to split the output of the 12 GPM pump and supply about 3 GPM to PTO and power steering and the remaining 9 GPM to the 3pt hitch and remotes. This is accomplished with a valve body with channels in it and valves with some springs and "O" rings and inlet/outlet ports.

If you have the mechanical know how a good shop service manual and an air compressor and some very fine emery cloth, for $1500 I would try overhauling the MCV. It is probably nothing more than a piece of dirt or broken "O" ring lodged in one of the ports or valves.

No, the pto wasn't effected, but the steering and the hitch was, and also the remotes if anything was on those. The greater the load on the pto, the worse everything else got, the steering and the hitch for example, would stop working properly, like it was starved for oil. They put guages on the remotes and tested the pump and said that was ok, but they said it was the MCV that was causing the problem, and they tried to clean it, but it didn't help it any, so I am thinking the valves might be all eroded out of the thing, since it has been developing problems for several years, slowly getting worse and worse.

Before spending the price for a new MCV, give the valve a through cleaning. Will have to remove it to do a proper job. Can polish the valves with crocus cloth. Have also lapped the bore the valves go in with very fine lappping compound like used for injector nozzles. Also make sure the pto valve is adjusted properly. Also check that pto linkage is not rusted up. Has to move freely so valve is in correct position or will cause problem you describe

The pto linkage works super easy, and engages/disengages like it should. The pto isn't the problem, that works 100%, it's the 3pt hitch, powersteering, and the remotes that don't work right and the greater the load on the pto, the worse everthing else gets.

Jon, the Chevy dealer should have caught the bad ground on our van's gas gauge too, but they didn't - Instead they threw parts at it - new dash, new sending units, even a new tank - They had that van more than we did - Unless that valve is all rusted, which it shouldn't be, having oil in it, it has to be rebuildable - Like someone else said, an o-ring, a blob of junk? on mine they oil got gummy from not being changed, those valves get sticky, your all done -

Jon,
Is there anyone at the dealership that has worked on the older IH tractors? It is a simple adjustment & one would not relate it to hyd problems. PTO will work fine, valve missadjustment causes other proplems. Mike is refering to the flowdivider which gives priority oil for steering. This and all other valves need to be free in the bore. Has the problem just came on recently? You don't happen to be running another valve bank Off of a remote that is tied back to supply oil? You haven't mentioned any brake problem, usually loose oil to brakes with this problem.

Jon, some years ago I had a similar thing with my 574, but only the PS was affected - Under the belly of the tractor is about a 1 1/4" hex head, looks like a plug, but it's a valve of sorts. Had to remove it & clean it - twice - The PS would fight you, then work, then not - Worth a look -
