I found the line on the flywheel and the notch on housing. If these are the timing marks. the mag snaps about 2 1/2 inchs before they line up.Is this wrong? If so how do I adjust it? Thanks Bill

Another way to find TDC (Top Dead Center) is to remove the #1 spark Plug and test with you thumb like the "Cornhusker Cowman" said then put a wire (Another use for baling wire!) in the spark plug hole to tell when the piston stops coming up. That's TDC.

Id suggest finding top dead center by removing #1 sparkplug and turning engine over until you start to feel compression with your thumb in the hole. Then use a srewdriver or something to fell as you continue turning engine slowly to find top dead center. If you find a mark there fine. Now time your magneto so the points are just starting to open with the rubbing block pointed to the #1 plug wire and impulse disengaged. Change the setting by turing the rotating disk on the mag drive. Only 2 bolt holes will line up opisite each other at a time. Hope you can see the timing disk in this pic.

bill, the way cowman says to do it is right, and if you check the book harvester goes through that same procedure. if you can't tell #1 when the piston is up remove the valve cover and follow the valve timing. #1 intake will close when #1 is coming up to fire. the plug firing 2 1/2" before the mark is bad wrong and you will have to turn the coupler like he says. just after the mark is okay with the timing retarded. too much retard will make 'er run hot , so get it close by the book and it won't kick.
