I looked at a another 1086 yesterday. This one wasn"t quite as purdy as the other one, but I was actually fairly impressed with it.
7200 hrs.
serial #31149 (1978)
$7500
digital tach that didn"t work (why digital on a "78?)
No noises in gears, rear end, motor that I could hear. I even rode around on the drawbar, per your suggestion.
A/C didn"t work (I"d be fixing that before spring)
Everything else seemed to work fine- steering/front end nice and tight.
T/A worked fine.
PTOs turned (no load).
Wider, newer cab steps.
Concerns:
trans oil pressure (hyd?) light on dash was on fairly often (of course when clutch is down and when shifting T/A, but also at slow idle when warm). Does that mean pump is failing? Do you have to split tractor to replace?
Small engine oil leak near back- could be rear main, but seemed more external than coming out of clutch housing.
Rear radial tires were worn kind of funny, like worn at an angle, like a car with the front end out of alignment. Didn"t see any wobble or bent rim, etc. when I was riding on drawbar.
It seemed more like a good honest working tractor with some details to be fixed. Not as many red flags as a "we just got done fixing this thing up and want to dump it before you discover the real problem" type of tractor. Seems like there might be something there to work with.
Dunno. What d"ya think?
Paul

Well as far as the Teltle lite blinking first i would have them put a gaue on it and see what ya go for pressure as it may be just a bad sender if not then here are the could bee's it could be the pump it could be in the super charger system if it is a PFC hyd. system tractor or it could be a weak pressure releif in the MCV circuit . as for the oil leak on the back of the engine it more then likely is the O/Ring between the back engine plate and the block that seals the cam galley as there is no rear soft plug for the cam galley and to stop this leak ya must split the tractor at the bell housing and remove the clutch and flywhell and back engine plate and reseal . Smack my hand but i did not do that on my buddys 1066 when we went thru it and now it is leaking a bit and i told him to LIVe with it till we realy need to split again then i'll fix that . as for the Digital dash now that can get into your pocketbook as i am told . You will have to forgive me but i would rather have one that did not have all the newer stuff on it . As for the tires well some of them radials will ware funny if ya don't have the air pressure correct all the time and ran on the road a bunch.

This one does not have the PFC system on it, or at least it doesn"t have the extra filter up by the left side oil pan.
I thought the digital tachs came on the later ones, but maybe late "78 was late enough. ? All the other gauges are analog. Can one put a regular tach on one of those with the digital tach? Is the drive mechanism the same? I assume it comes off the model 100 inj pump, like my 4166.
What would be the worst case scenario with the hyd light issue? Bad pump? Is that in the tranny and do you have to split the old boy? MCV issues would at least be easier to get to, no? Can I check the pressure at the remote outlets, or would that not give the reading that we want?

Ya check the pressure in two places on the MCV one just takes a fitting with a O/Ring and lock nut in the bottom right corner of the MCV and the other place to check takes a special test tool . As far a changing out the dash here i do not know if it can be done as never looked into it . And checking hyd . pressure thru a remot only tells ya what the pressure is on the rear pump . Pressure on the MCv should be at least 235 lbs , myself i like to set them up to 265 or so . If ya could get them to check it out and tell ya what she is doing then i would say that the price is not to bad but if they don't want to get into it then beat them up a bit and offer 6500 and i don't think that you will get hurt to bad and leaves room for repairs and have a good tractor . Do i need to look in the mail for a plane ticket????

Shoot, from OH, you could just take a drive over here, or take a liesurly drive on an F-12 or something!
Thanks for the help. I will be looking into it. Seems they all go for over $10,000 around here. I"ll keep you posted.

Paul,

That light is controlled by a ground switch. It just might have a wire rubbin' somewhere on the chassis.

Worst case; it will need a front pump. No big deal really, but if it were weak, you'd think you notice it in the forward hydraulic system.

You better be for gettin' yer tractor before they are all gone. :>)

Thanks Allan, that does put my mind at ease a bit.
I"ll be looking into this one a bit. You"re right, I sure don"t want to run out of 1086 tractors to look at! ;>)
