Hi all...I have been aquiring parts to put my H electrical system back to original 6 volt pos ground. I have a new original style wiring harness, new regulator,( mounts on rear fuel tank mount), a strong 6 volt battery, and a generator (1100501) that worked fine on the tractor it came off of. Heres the problem; after hooking it all up and polorizing the gen, started up and battery voltage went from 6.45 to 5.60, amp meter pegged on charge side, and the gen started getting hot after running for a few minutes. ...took gen and regulator to the local rebuild shop, they said gen was fine, regulator was bad. Got another new regulator, put it all back together and still the same thing, only now the ampmeter hunts back and forth a bit before it pegs on the charge side. I charged the battery up to 6.50 volts before I polorized it, after starting the voltage drops back down to 5.60 volts and the amp meter is pegged on the charge side. I am not an electrician.....what should I check next?? I have double checked all the connections, everything is hooked where the manual says it should be. any help is greatly appreciated.....Tom

Personally, I think if it were a snake, it'd bite you! QUIT looking at the overall pic's and trace each wire seperately, and you will find the problem!

Tom -

A voltage reading of 5.40 volts says the battery is being discharged. And the ammeter pegging on the charge side at the same time says either the ammeter is wired up backward **or** the battery hot and ground cable connections are reversed.

---

Here’s what I’d do:

1 - Double check the battery ground polarity: The ground cable should be on the battery POSITIVE post.

2 - Check for proper ammeter function: Turn on the ignition or lights without starting the engine. If the ammeter indicates discharge you are good. But if it indicates charge, swap the wires at the two ammeter posts.

3 - Make sure the regulator base is solidly grounded. If it’s at all questionable run a separate ground wire from the regulator base to a good ground - like where the grounded battery cable bolts to the frame.

4 - Repolarize the generator. (With the battery connected and the ignition off momentarily jumper the regulator BAT and GEN terminals.)

---

Now start and run the engine. If the battery **still** does not charge the most likely problem is a bad regulator.

Hope this helps!

I have the same problem with my Farmall 300. All new wiring, regulator, amp meter, and generator set up on 12 volt and it will not show a charge even after being polerized. I'm still discusted on the situation.

Just went out a checked again. Wires are hooked up as your diagram shows. I dont have the lights wired yet so I took the the wire from the light switch to the L term on the regulator off, still no change. It seems the battery is draining, is at 6.04 volts with engine off now?????

To add to the #?*!! I started the tractor, ampmeter pegged again, shut it off and the amp meter was still pegged. Tapped on the regulator and the ampmeter went to 0. Is it possible to have two bad new voltage regulators in a row??

posible,,,not probable.

sounds like the battery is neg ground or a hot wire in the wrong place....
