My H’s engine is in the machine being rebuilt (new everything) and when I get it back it will be long blocked. Auto engines can be pre ‘oil primed’ by a tool on a drill turning the oil pump. What are the ticks of the trade to prime my H’s engine with oil before I hit the start button? Thanks in advance! EdRed

A clean thumb squirt oilcan with a rubber hose made into an adapter can be used to precharge the system. Take out the oil pressure line that goes to the gauge, and have at it. It can take 3 or 4 cans of oil, but I like the fact that everything is prelubed. The pumping gets tougher when it fills. A little time a simple process, and great insurance. JimN

Allan in NE has it right, the engine should have been assembled with engine lube where lube is required. This keeps things slippery until the pressure is there.

We had a pressure vessle filled with engine oil
and connected a hose into the oil gallery. We used air pressure to push the oil throughout the engine. Make sure you prime the oil pump before installing on the engine too. One of Wagner's brake bleeder tank is a good choice for doing this. They have bladder that separates the air from the oil. I spun the oil pump on a GM car
with a drill after I had the engine together. I don't think that's possible on the tractor engines since the oil pump engages the cam shaft. Hal

Exactly what I've done. Works everytime. BTW if the cam and/or lifters have been replaced, remove the lifters while this is done. Once you're ready to start, re-install them. Saves from whiping off the cam lobe break-in lube.

Hi Ed,

I leave the plugs out, pull the coil wire and spin 'em up with the starter until they show pressure. Doesn't take long; just a few turns of the engine.

Allan
