I am finishing up the 54 SM-D/TA. The paint turned out awesome using factory IH paint mixed 8 parts paint-1 part IH thinner-1 part hardener, over IH red oxide primer.
Here's the question...Should the decal up front be the standard "winged" SMTA or is it supposed to have the acronim MD/TA below the word super?
The reason I ask is every old picture I have ever seen has the regular "winged" SMTA decal and the word "Diesel" is on the fuel tank.
Recently I saw a picture of a "restored" one and to my surprise the "winged" decal had the word "Super" on the top as it should, but on the bottom it had MD-T/A. It still had the word "Diesel" on the fuel tank.
This is a really rare tractor as most of you know and every aspect of it has been done correctly with painstaking hours spent with attention to correctness. Can you or can anyone help me. Drew

Bill,

I think that is the decal that is supposed to be on a 54 SMTA that has the T/A delete option. Not 100% sure though....I have 3 archive photos from Wisconsin historical society and they all show the standard "Super", with the M-T/A and the word on the wing "Torque Amplifier". I can see the word "Diesel" on the tank on 2 out of the 3. I had hoped that the "Guru", Guy would have weighed in by now....but to no avail.

Well now that you have mentioned it i went throgh the same on mine.my tractor had a round decal with no wing super at top MTA middle torque amplifire at the bottom in small letters.Diesel on the tank I've got the women digging out the pictures to see if i'am telling you right.I was told that they was fake but i can tell you one thing if fake they done a darn go job faking the little ones that are not supplyed after assembly line. After going through that i've seen all kind of decals on these things.

On page 114 of Guy's letter series book is a picture of a Super MDTA. The decal says Super M-TA with the winged Torque Amplifier below. Diesel is below the hood style line. I assume this is correct, otherwise Guy would have said it wasn't. Maple Hunter and probably others sell Super MTA diesel decals along with Super MDTA decals. Perhaps Guy will read this and have the last word.

I don"t think there are too many people with guy"s amount of knowlege.

I like how you put "restored". that should be your first clue. I trust old photos a lot more than I do looking at restored tractors.

I recently looked at a "restored" super MCH (cotton harvester) with a super M-CH decal on it.
I was told it was a fake decal.

I think officially your tractor was called a "Super MTA Diesel". I don"t think IH ever called it a Super MDTA. Super MTA was the model name, then the diesel was an option of that model.
