Al, Start by pulling out spark plug #1.Start turning engine over with your right hand on top of fan blade. Put left hand index finger in spark plug hole. While turning fan over the top away from you, continue untill you start to feel compression. When you start to feel it, stop turning motor and go to other side. Now grasp fan at top again and pull it over the top towards you until the dot on the casting is indexed with the timing pointer. Now take the mag and make a mark on the outside of it where the tower for #1 cylinder is at.(This way you know where it is when you take off the cap.) It will be at about the 2 O'clock position. Next take off the cap and turn the big gear until the rotor button ligns up with the mark you made on the mag. Insert mag into housing and you will find that the beveled gears will turn the rotor 1 tooth out of time. Pull it back out and cheat it over that one tooth and put it in again. Now it should be really close to the mark you put on the housing. (where it needs to be.) Next, put the bolts back in it and just snug it up. (Now comes the fun part.) Turn the mag as far advanced as it will go. Next turn the motor over twice until it comes back to the dot ligning up with the pointer again and stop turning.(Again, you have to make 2 full revolutions to get back to fire on #1.) Now grasp the mag with both hands and very, very slowly turn it back upwards towards the motor....going really slowly until you hear the impulse coupling "SNAP"....STOP IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU HEAR IT SNAP. And tighten up the mag. This will be within 2 degrees of where you need to be. (Close enough to get her to crank. Once started again, loosen mag bolts and experiment with it while she is running, going a little one way, then the other untill you get max idle rpm's. Then I personally like to turn it just a fuz towards the engine. Some will say not to....but sometimes if you leave it at max rpm's, it is idling that way because it is advanced just a little bit, and can make it hard to start that way. Others will tell you to put a timing light on it, but I am just a little bit to stupid I guess, cause I can't get em to run right when I use a light.
