Cub belly mower - How big can I resonable go?

I have two 48' cubs, one with hand controls and one with touch hydrolics. I would like to put a belly mower on one. Which one would be the best one to use, and can I go with a six foot belly mower, or do I have to use a five foot. If any one has a six foot mower on there cub, I want to hear your experiences straight from the source. Any suggestions or brand name suggestions would be great.

What kind of mower you need depends on your use. 6 foot is defintely too big for a cub. 59 inch (5 foot to make it simple) is about all a cub can handle and is good for mowing lawn if you don't let it get too far out of hand. For heavier mowing, weeds, etc. either a 42 inch rotarty, or a 48 inch flail mower are good. As to which tractor to put it on, I have my mower on the one with hand lift, and use items such as plow, blade, etc. on the hydrlaic lift one. The assist spring on the hand lift can be adjsuted to compensate for the different weight mowers, plus you don't raise and lower a mower near as much as you do most other implemnets.

For my money, you can't beat the Woods 42 inch belly mower on a Cub. I mow about 8 acres of rough stuff with it here in the mountains of East KY, and my '57 Cub walks right through it in 2nd gear. Sometimes have to go to 1st if I let it get real long.

Ditto...Cub with a Woods 42 will handle just about anything you can get under it. It'll handle a Woods 59 in short grass, and the IH/Danco 60" pulls a little harder. The Woods 59 is a pretty good match for a 140/Super A, but it's marginal on a Cub.

If you've got your heart set on a 6-foot mower, you probably need an H. But they're your Cubs, so the final decision is yours. Just remember, you can hitch a road grader to the back of a Chevette, but that doesn't mean it'll work out well.

I have a 5 foot (Woods L59) deck on my Massey Pony, and it cuts great. It obviously can"t be used as a brush hog, but it works great as a lawn mower. The Pony is the same horsepower as the Cub, so I think you would be fine with the 5 foot deck. Woods decks are really nice, way better than the IH deck on my Farmall A.

Have you considered a gang reel mower? My 1947 Cub can easily pull a five gang Jorgenson in second on a lawn. It will even handle third if the ground is sloping down. The width of cut is 10ft. The commercial quality unit with the big wheels can be had for around $200.

I'd go with a 4' mower for a Cub. I have a 5' on my Super A and if I force it hard the mowing looks like someone had their hair cut with a broad axe. I've never seen my Super A starved for power on my mower, however in 6" to 8" grass it will warm the engine as much as any work I do with my tractors. I find if the mower gets a bit dull this is worse plus it will warm up belt and pullies on the mower drive.

Having said the above, and knowing the Cub only has 10 hp. Bear in mind also if you live in a area with annual rainfall under 20" your grass will not be as thick and lush as we get with 40" of rain. I know in a dry spell in this clay ground we have, Super A would probably run a 12' mower. If your in a low annual rainfall area, the Cub will probably do ok on a 5 or 6 foot mower.

for just mowing grass sure seems to be a lot of happy owners but you dont want to let it get too long like they say just short 10hp make sure the tires arent oversized. You would be better with 8.3 turf on a 7in rim.

Forget the 6 footer. The 5 foot mower is a load if in anything more than a fairlt flat shorter lawn. If you are mowing any heavy ar long grass, go with a 42 or 48" mower. The Cub only has abt. 10 Hp, so it won't do real well with too big of mower.

my uncle had a 59 inch woods under the allis C without any troubles. I'd put it under the one with hydraulics. He didn't have any trouble with the woods I bet he used it for a good 10 years or maybe more and maybe put new blades on it mowing about 4 to 5 acres. The only thing about the wider deck would be that it has no wheels out on the left side to sit between.
