Water temp guage not reading

I've got a 460 diesel that I just put a tank heater on. I removed the temp sensing bulb and installed a tee into the head, and installed the sensing bulb into one side of the tee, and connected the hose out the top of the heater to the other side of the tee. Now my temp guage barely registers. I have the radiator 100% full and free of air. I cracked the sensing bulb nut loose until water leaked out to vent the air out. What gives?

Had the same problem on my H after putting a tee fitting into the head for the tank heater.

No easy way out of it, it's just going to read lower. Maybe there is another place on the head that you can install the temp probe or the heater hose? Not familiar enough with the 460 diesel to know for sure...

Simple thermodynamics, my friend. Big mass of circulating water inside thick cast iron head vs. tiny mass of stagnant water inside thin iron pipe tee.

The water in the tee will never reach the same temperature as the water in the head because it can only gain heat by conduction, and being out away from the engine, it will loose heat faster as well. In other words, the hot water no longer flows past the sensor bulb.

You can prove there's nothing wrong with the temperature gauge by temporarily putting the bulb back into its original location.

there is ether in the cbleof the gaugeand in the tip that threads into the block. when you took that off you probably broke that tip or something. very common problem.

Any time you pull a heat gauge bulb from it's intended location, and move it back out into a "tee", it's going to read lower.

Plus, you may be getting a flow of cooler water from low in the block, through the tank heater, and into the "tee" where the sender is.
