The stop for the steering on my 300U is broke off on the front right spindle. I know now why when I turn to the right sometimes my right front wheel will flop all the way around. I then have to raise the front end up with the loader and fix it. Can I get someone to weld a new stop on or should I look for a used spindle? A guy I work with says its cast iron and would be hard to weld too.

Like the guys said above, they are made of cast steel not cast iron.. They will weld just fine with 7014 or 7018.. 3/32 rod diameter and several passes. Clean the area thoroughly of grease and oil before starting your first pass. Clean all the slag completely with a chipping hammer and wire brush. I use a wire cup mounted on a 4in. hand grinder. It cleans up those little recesses very well.. Good luck.. Tallperson

It's not really that hard to weld because it is cast steel. Not quite as nice as rolled steel but you may not notice the difference. A little preheat and a good 6010, 6011, 7014, 7018 weld, whatever you are comfortable with. I don't guess I'd MIG it.

Even the letter series all had cast steel for spindles and other high-stress cast parts.

I like Andy's suggestion of 7014. A bit stronger, and easy to start and clean the slag off of when making multiple passes. V out the location to assure a deep weld, and do not do it in one pass, make several and beat the devil out of it between passes with a pick hammer, or a center punch, to stress relieve the metal. Welding cast iron requires some slightly special skills and techniques but it can be done. I'm sure you can find someone in your area that isn't afraid of it, but you might want to see if you can locate a used spindle also.
