My son just came home with a new to him utility 240. Forward of the distributer is a pump reservoir that looks to be bone dry. Is this the power steering pump, or a hydraulic pump.

Transmission level plug is on the right rear, access through a hole in the right side Fast-Hitch mounting bracket.

Well on the 340, there is a bolt you take out to see when the transmission and hydralics are full. On the 340 the check bolt or screw is located under the footplate on the clutch side of the transmission.

I agree with Old, sounds like you are looking at the engine oil fill cap. On a 240, the hydraulics and power steering (if it has the optional power steering) use the same pump and reservior. The pump is mounted to the right side of the engine. The reservior is cast into the clutch housing. On the top left side, right behind the bell housing, you"ll see a plug that takes a 1 1/4" wrench. That"s the fill plug for the hydraulic system. I don"t know what the official oil level is supposed to be, I just keep mine about 3" below the top. The transmission is filled through a plug behind the seat. Once again, I do not know the official method of checking it, but I do know it takes five gallons, so when I got the tractor, I drained it, flushed it, and dumped in five gallons of new oil. Other than engine oil, hyd. oil, and transmission oil, only other fluid you need to check is the coolant.

I think what your looking at is the place you use to fill up the engine oil pan. I have a 340 on my place right now and my partner asked me the same question about that cap on it. I told him the same thing. Hyds and power steering use the tranny area for its oil on this 340 so it should be the same on a 240 I would think
