Plow for a Super M ???

I may be able to get a 3 bottom 16" McCormic Hydraulic plow for a very good price, but I am not sure if my Super M will handle it or not.

Would this be a good choice, or should I look for a three bottom 14" for it.

It would be working in ground that gets plowed every year, about 7" deep.

Thank You

I'm curious why you would plow the same ground every year? What are you planting 7 inches deep. Get a good disc and forget the plowing. You are just bringing up a lot of dormant weed seeds going down there. Not to mention the loss of moisture.Savt that gas for other jobs.

Gordo: While I can appreciate what your saying from a SD perspective, there are parts of this continent that actually have to get rid of excess moisture. Plowing has served us well.

Your Super M if tuned up properly, properly balasted and the plow properly set, will pull 3x16 in any soil. Bear in mind all those things must be right. An out of adjustment plow can drag 15 hp off your tractor, probably 30% of the traction. The big item tractor wise in pulling any trailer plow is ballast. For what your proposing, maximum Calcium Chloride plus two sets of wheel weight would be wise.

I plowed for a number of years with Farmall 300, pulling an IH No. 60, 3x16 trailer plow. I then went to a 560D with No. 60, 4x16 plow and still later to a 656D with 510 semi-mount, 5x16, and I always plowed 7 to 8 inches deep. Now, I will grant you, I was in sandy loam. Just the other day I was out with my Farmall 140, meanest of heavy clay, pulling a 2x12 mounted plow 6 to 7 inches deep. My 300 and 560 did have chloride plus one set of wheel weights pulling those trailer plows. My 656 pulled that 5x16 semi-mount without any weight added, liquid or solid. I do use wheel weights on my 140.

My friend, plow adjustment has made more good tractors look bad than any other factor. By the way, Bob M needs an extra set of wheel weights to compensate for low operator weight. Notice how he's sitting right on the back edge of seat trying to gain as much as he can from his 165# carcass.

this reminds me of being young and plowing with a massy 101jr with a car engine in it(six cylinder and no governor would relly throw the dirt ) our neighbor had a cletrac pulling 3 bottoms. he was really getting his fields done quicker. so, we jumped the fence and meaused the depht, he was only going 5 inches and we were plowing 10 inches. we got a good laugh out of this, we were pulling 2-16;s. this forum brings back the old days when you plowed all day and night too. it was ohio black dirt.

Your M should handle 3 bottoms without much of a problem. Here in Southern Wisconsin we've got some pretty rich stuff, and I can go all day with 3-16's and not really have a issue.

I know a lot of guys on the board have said an M won't handle 3 bottoms, but I just can't fathom that...unless they are talking about working up straight clay or ground that hasn't been touched in two decades. There is no reason that a Farmall M in good tune and running order, shouldn't pull either 3-14's or 3-16's. Just my opinion.

I think your Super M will handle it ok since you're going to plow every year. You may have a problem in sod with hills. I used a Farmall A with the 16-inch moldboard plow on sod. It plowed this with no problem, but it was on level ground. It did cause some wheel slippage as I only had wheel weights and no fluid in the tires.

I say, maybe, maybe not. In heavy soil and poor conditions 2 bottms is plenty for an M. In lighter soil your super M should do OK with 3 16s if you don't go to deep. Look at that pic of the 4 bottom, if he was in the depth of the tires I could stop him in black dirt.

I think that "yellow wheel" is the rear end of a John Deere M with a 2 bottom mounted plow.

The image above is at at our fall plow day in mid-September. Punch below for a few more shots...

My Super M pulls this Oliver 4 x 14" plow nicely. Yours should handle a 3 x 16" with no difficulty!

I was at that plow day a couple years ago Bob M. While it's true that your Super M pulled that plow well enough to turn over dirt, you really could've used one less bottom or at least a couple of fat guys standing on the drawbar for ballast. There was a lot of spinning and quite a bit of lifting and lowering of the plow to keep the tractor moving along.

No doubt with one more set of weights and loaded tires that Super M would pull that plow as deep as you wanted in that sweeeee et ground, though. Not a rock in site down there, lucky buggers.

We use to pull 3-14's with an M so ifn your Super don't pull 3-16's you need to pour in some more jet fuel. Shouldn't be any problem at all. Harley
