A couple years ago I dropped a 12v battery and ballast resistor with new cables on the sm, and it's been charging ever since and I've never had a voltage regulator last as long as this one. Since I finally figured out the bad gas problem, I've been starting it up for a few minutes every week. Last month I hotwired my headlights that I never did get wired properly, and I've noticed that when I turn them on, My ampeter actually reads HIGHER. I've never seen that before, it always read lower before I went to 12v. I'm also getting my power off the cable at the solenoid instead of in the box with the ampmeter, ignition switch, and rotary light switch. Is this something odd or should it do that?

Sounds like the lights are wired in ahead of the ammeter on the battery side. Check to verify that the lights are indeed on the battery side of the ammeter, & if so, the ammeter reading would be normal. If the lights are wired in on the load side of the ammeter, there should be negligible ammeter deflection with the lights on.
