Will a 1957 350 starter fit an H?

I have a 1947 Farmall H. It gets started and used as a chore tractor here on the farm about every day.

Two years ago it was converted to 12 volt, which allowed it to actully start in the winter.

Recently, however since being converted to 12 volt it is chewing up starter drives and flywheel ring gears about one or twice a year.

Does anyone know if a 1957 350 factory 12v gas starter will fit on an H? This would solve my problem if it did.

Thanks

We have had the tractor on the farm for 20 years. 3 years before we went to 12 volt, I changed the ringgear & bendix. The starter on the tractor is the same starter thats been on it for 20 years, never had the problem with six volt.

I think the everyday use of the speeded up 6v starter using 12v has been the culprit damaging the ringgear.

So, if I get a 350 12v starter and put the H nose housin on it, should work or not?

Thanks

A 12 volt starter from late 140 will bolt on with no alterations. The 140 starter may not be as heavy as H starter but I have been using one on M for several years with no problems.

Im thinking you have the wrong starter to start with.Simply changing to 12 volt would not cause the ring gear and drive gear to chew up.

I put a 12 volt system on my h 15 years ago. It to gets started quite often and it has never chewed up the starter of ring gear, since i replaced them initially.

A 350 starter will not fit on an H. A 350 is a 3 bolt pattern and an H is a 2 bolt pattern.

You could put the nose piece of the h on the 350 starter so it will bolt up....but you should know what you are doing before attempting.

Not sure why it is chewing up your ring gear or the bendix? Were they both in good shape.
