Recently a friend of mine bought some property, and with it he inherited a Farmall H. I was elected to get it running. I know very little about red, so I will need some tips. Why are there vertical rotation slots on the distributor assy.? Is this for timing, or is this for ease of point installation? Presently, it is rotated outward, and it looks like the hood is rubbing on the coil wire. (The coil wire has been wraped in black tape) This may be the source of the bad miss. Also, there seems to be no adjustment for the generator belt. It to seems to be rubbing on the hood. Any help on these items would be appreciated. Thanks

It is a generator set-up, but I don't know if it's factory or not. I don't recall the split-sheeve pully for adjustment that Cowman mentioned. Unfortunatly, the tractor is an hour and a half away, at our "deer camp", so I can't run out and look.

Is it a generator or alternater?

Something is seriously not-stock on that tractor. The generator belt doesn't come anywhere near the hood on a stock H. Belt tension is adjusted at the generator pulley. The two halves of the pulley screw toward each other, pushing the belt further out in the pulley, tightening the belt.

What do you mean by "rotation slots?"

It must be a delco conversion as Cowman suggested. It has a vertical distributor with a 90 degree turn to the right at the base. It bolts on to the old mag assy.? or whatever (I'm not sure) but there is where the slots are allowing you to rotate the dist. away from the engine block, or toward it. Presently it is rotated out, and rubs on the hood. (It stands tall) What should I do?

I think, but can't be sure, that the distributor also rotates in/on its 90degree casting. Turning that will allow the other slots to be adjusted to clear the hood(maybe). JimN

Why the hood is anywhere near the hood is a mystery to me. Unless yours is a vertical delco conversion? And then I don't know why it would be tipped out? Timing can be adjusted by rotating the distributor. The generator should have an adjustable sheeve pulley on it. Other than that any 4 cylinder spark ignition engine is pretty simple. If you can fix one you can fix them all. Just remember what you learned in school, Intake, compression, power, and exhaust.
