This weekend I picked up an (unknown year) 856 for $3500, its got a loader and cab, liquid in and weights on the back tires. Not the prettiest tractor ever but it made the 27 mile drive home. I knew it would have some 'quirks' to deal with. It's a Cozy Cab, Koyker K5 loader, 1000rpm pto only.I read through posts back to Jan '06 before posting my questions, I am sure a little more time on here and I'll find solutions to my questions. Tractor Vet posted the following list of things to check on a new tractor in another thread. I look at things like. How much slop is on the clutch pedal Works Great Brake pedals Stops on a dime How wobbly is the seat suspension Not wobbly but my 245lbs does bottom it out How are the tires Like new condition but have been sitting for an extended period of time Sheet metal No fenders (has cab) needs paint Condition of the paint Hard to tell under all the diesel grease but I think it could use a coat Does all the lights work No lights work Does it shift easy I think the shifter linkage needs to be rebuilt or rebushed Does the T/A work . In high range yes, but when the lever is pulled back and trying to start or slow speeds up a hill in a lower gear it will slip Projects that I need to work on Hydraulic fluid leaking from up top of the transmission somewhere, hard to tell with Cab in the way, but it looks like its the hydraulic hoses going to the hydraulic steering box. TA does not seem to work in low range. Tach does not work, I tightened down the cable end up on the drive (left front of motor) and it worked for about 30 seconds until I hit the throttle, then it quit working again. Cab is missing 3 windows (no biggie, I'll get some cut by a glass shop) No lights, the housings are there but no wires connected. I'm not overly worried about this, I've got a plan. Fuel filters (maintenance). Sheet metal is 'mostly' there but not bolted on. I'd like to rebuild the shifter, the H/L/R 1/2/3/4 levers seem very lose on the shaft. If anybody can assist me in finding resources on how to rebuild the shifters and where to get parts I'd appreciate it. I also need an ignition switch with key. And to know how some of you connected your loader to the onboard hydraulics. Eventually I'd like to upgrade to a 540/1000 PTO but that can wait. Before I do too much with the TA I am going to find information about adjustments and testing procedures and secure a factory manual. Sorry for the long post and no pictures but I wanted to try to accurately describe my situation. This tractor is taking over bale and snow moving chores from my '51 CoOp E4, which I will retire to light duty work and tractor pulling. thanks for reading and in advance for any help. -ron
