I was on the H the other day and heard a fairly loud bang under my feet. It was loud enough to startle me. Engine continued running OK and so did the transmission, but now I can hear clicking when I"m in gear, especially going uphill or under a load. It seems to run OK in Reverse, 1st, 3rd & 4th, but haven"t had it in 2nd or 5th.

Any thoughts out there?

It's hard to know what broke without you take the top off and see. Whatever it was, if it's still running it will likely get worse. It might just be a tooth chipped, and right now you only have to replace one gear. Good luck, Wm

I would bet that a bull gear cage broke from what you are describing. That isn't uncommon on H & M tractors with wear.

If it is a bull gear cage that broke loose, is that something to be concerned about immediately? Is it OK to continue using the tractor?

I'd pull the top cover & take a look. Could be a ball out of a bearing went through a couple of gear teeth, or a piece of foreign material.
