At the inner end of the PTO output shaft in the clutch type PTO units on the 340, 450, 504, 560 and other tractors, there is a clutch retainer snap ring or retaining ring (no. 47 on 560 diagram, part 373588R1, that is used with the original shaft, 373546R1. This must have proven to be too weak, so the ring is not even replaceable, and the new one is twice as thick (1/8 inch square crosssection) but must be installed with the new R2 version of the shaft. Does anyone have any experience with this issue? I'm thinking about widening the snap ring groove on my lathe to take the new one, but that would leave only a very thin shoulder. Don't know if the newer shaft had a different end profile. Thanks. Charlie

There maybe a metric snapring that is thinner than the fat new style, and thicker than the original that will work. I would go that route, and leave a little strength on the end.
Put a gob of clay on the end and reassemble it temporarily. Measure the amount of squish on the clay to see if it would bind up. If there is some clearance to internal components, I would probably braze up the end of the shaft about an eigth and then widen the groove. If it would not fit, I would remove built up material till it did. Good luck, JimN
