I have a guy wanting to sell a 1985 IH 684 diesel tractor. The tires are fair, the tin is good but missing cover over battery. The only problem is that he took the injector pump off to replace seal (diesel in oil) and the guy that replaced the pump did not time it correctly and it is not currently running. He wants me to make an offer. I'm going over to look at it Saturday and want to be fair. What would you offer? This is about a 70 HP tractor.

Thanks guys for the imput. I believe he told me the diesel getting into the oil was fixed and the tractor only needed to be timed. I will know more tomorrow. thanks again.

Hi Jrry, saw this on the net: IHC 684 w/FEL & 3 PTH, 65 hp, low hrs,exc cond Special CND $18,900 and another 684 for US $4000. My brother says 684s about CND $10,000.
Official HP is 62, my brothers dyno'ed at 66 and we would turn the pump up to about 70 when chopping corn.
Re timing, guy probably removed cap screws from timing gear when all that is required to remove pump from timing gear is to remove the big nut on the end of the injection pump drive shaft.
My brother did that on his 454 and I just retimined it by putting the timing adjustment to the middle position and working from there.
If it is timed to fast it will kick back on the starter, to slow it is hard to start, requiring many revs of the engine. Proper timing is when tractor is warm the engine will start in 1 revolution of engine.
If you have a shop service manual, you can do a static timing by the book.

Re seal leaking Diesel into crankcase, this can be prevented by adding Diesel fuel conditioner or a couple table spoons of engine oil every time you refuel tractor. These old Bosch injection pumps relied on lubrication from the Diesel fuel but the newer Diesel fuel with low sulphur has less lubrication.

Good luck

The 684 is 1 step under the 784. 784 has 67 hp, I forget whether that is pto or drawbar, 684 will be a little smaller. I am in the minority on this forum, but the 784 I drove was a true lemon, always broken down. Everything from the injection pump in the first 10 hours to the front spindle in the next 100, to some engine problem my boss refused to fix before it had 1000 hrs on it. We (state agency) finally sold it to the lowest bidder. It was not abused. I think the assembly line must have been mad at IH, perhaps that was their last big strike and the janitors were building it, don't know. As I said no one else has had the problems with that line of tractors that we did. As to your prospective one, any bugs have likely long since been fixed.

Jrry, I have a 584 and that series kept its value pretty well. Most 584's that are decent will still fetch 10 grand, so a 684 in good working condition should be equivalent or more. The problem is its not running. I would try this: Make him an offer on the tractor as if it was working well, then if he agrees , get the tractor repaired and deduct the repair from the price. He will have to agree to this before hand, otherwise I would not buy it not running with no guarantee that it will run and run well.
