I'm not sure if the old cap on my 300u is stock. It doesnt lock and is a chrome color, with knurls on the edge and a slight dome on top, about 1" tall total. I got my new replacement cap (for free = ) ) so it will lock on. I havent put it on yet, but this thing is HUGE. It almost looks like an oil filter for a honda or something. It's black too, weird. Is everyone else's the same?

I got mine in less than a week for my two 300u.

Not in a big hurry to put them on because I have the fuel gauge in the cap.

But they sure did some engineering on them. Must have been one helluva law suit.

I got mine yesterday in a week afterm ordering. They are as you say, big and black. I am not sure I will use them though. The old ones have a vent and if you are careful not to overfill the tank there are no problems

That's the way the caps have been since they started replacing them back in the '70s. Ever bought a replacement body panel for a car/truck? They come painted with black primer/sealer to prevent rust. It's normal, and I think the black paint is less obtrusive than bright red on a rusty old H or a white Cub, for example. Plus, they're free for the asking, so count yourself lucky that they didn't paint them hot pink :)

Well if it locks on there, ill use it. Should be easier to take off since its bigger. I rarelty look over the hood to see where my bucket is, more to the side anyways. I guess I shouldnt have ben too surprised, as they are probably only doing this because they HAVE to. They could have least painted them red =)

That is why the free replacements. The gas cap you have did not release the pressure inside of the tank causing excessive pressure and possibly fires or worse. The new ones are vented and are supposed to prevent fires or explosions.

The original caps are vented also, the tractor will not run with a non-vented cap. The tall caps have baffles in them, to prevent the sloshing gasoline from spraying out of the vent hole and causing a fire.

Guess I had one to many barley sodas last night. Makes a person think they are smarter than they actually are. I did know it was to prevent fires though. 8>)

Yep, thats what they look like. It will grow on you after a while and you will not even notice it when you have to look around it to see over the hood.
