Zenith Carb drip

I have a Zenith Carburetor on my Super A and before I started this restoration it leaked all the time when it wasnt running. One of those drips that isnt a big deal but it just shouldnt do it. I think the leak came from the white (kind of white) plug in the bottom that has a small toothpick size hole in it. A friend said to just put some JB Weld in the hole and be done with it, thats what he did with his. My tractor guy said to just cut the gas off at the gas tank but I dont want to have to do that every time.

I have it in a chemical bath now and then going to paint it so I would like to get the problem fixed before gas starts dripping out again.

Solution?

i went thru the drippy carbs on a number of my farmalls. here are some things you can check. float levels, needle and seat in the float to see if it sticks. check to see if the float is bent and rubbing on the carb body. check to see if the bowl gasket is hitting the top of the float. check to see if the pin that holds the float on isnt sliding off the posts. one side has a hole the other has a slot, squeeze the slot side a little to tighten up the grip. check for a pinhole in the float, it may be fill up with fuel and drop. and here is one that happened on my minneapolis moline back hoe, the vented fuel cap was plugged, the tank would build up excessive pressure and squirt fuel thru the float.

When IH started using the neoprene tip on the needle valve I think they made a big mistake. I never had to shut the fuel off at the tank with the solid needle valve. If a little piece gets closed in the seat with the neoprene tip it seams to scar the tip just enough that will leak thru.Several years ago just before our local IH dealer closed I purchased all the needle seat sets he had, Over the years they all went in my tractors or in customers, no I am using the new style, but tell the customer to shut off the gas every nite

Picture of Carb and hole.

I think that hole is where the leak comes from.

The hole is there to drain excess gas.Not shutting the gas off will get you a crankcase full of gas.

I think I would completely rebuild that carb before I reinstalled it. You won't want to take it back off after its painted. Carefull not to get too much paint on the moving parts. Yes, you should shut off the fuel if its going to set with out running for more than a 1/2 hour or so. Dave.

Don't JB Weld the hole. That's where excess fuel is supposed to drain out. What you called a kind of white plug is probably a small welch plug which is retaining a small felt filter. The filter keeps dirt out and lets excess fuel drain out. You need to resolve the problem of the source of the excess fuel. Maybe your float valve is leaking or your float level is too high.

If you fill the hole with JB weld, it will just run the gas into the air cleaner. so the guy who told you that doesn't know how things work.

Turning the gas off at the tank is always a good idea on a gravity fuel system when the tractor won't be used for awhile.

It leaks because the fuel bowl is getting overfull. It could be caused by the float set wrong, or because the needle valve leaks. The cure is to keep soaking it and when it is done, put a new needle valve and seat in it and make sure the float is set right.
