Last weekend i bought a SA SN 250038, which means it was the 38th made out of 81 in 1947. I paid $1300.00, its alway been kept in a barn, 1 owner, all origional, never had any engine work, it runs perfect, hydrolics work perfect, all 4 wheel weights, original tires, good sheet metal etc. THe only thing it needs is both rear rims. This is my 1st antique and I bought it to restore, I know nothing about these tractors. I bought it not knowing what year it was. Now after researching the serial # I'm wondering if I should even restore it. Should I restore it or just ride it around the farm like it is. My idea of a "restoration" is remove every nut, bolt, etc. sand blast every piece. completely tear down tranny and motor even though it doesn't need to be rebuilt.

Great find! To me any of those first 81 tractors are "special." Can you show us some pictures?
Is the tractor "original" original, or has it been repainted in the past? Do you know its history?

Al

It is origional, never painted, never had any motor work. The motor leaks less oil than my toyota. the hydrolics need to be rebuilt b/c they leak but the pump is fine. The guy I bought it from didn't know anyhting about it, he only had it b/c he got it from his father inlaw, and the reason he bought it was he knew his fahter in law took very good care of it. He had it for 10 years and only used it once a year to plow potatoes. I checked the oil in the bottom of the air filter and there was very little sludge, so i suspect either the oil was changed very often or the tracter used very little by the origional owner. Also the oil cap has no sludge in the steel wool. The only reason i will redo the motor is so i can clean/paint the block, also a good friend of mine is a IH mechanic and he'll do it for nothing. The hood is in great shape, the grill has dents, the tractor is the usual old farmall faded red now brown color, surface rust but nothing bad, its deffinatly been kept inside. I don't have any pics but i'll get some. It has a shaft that comes from behind the right rear axle, into the area where the draw bar attatches, it turn with the wheel, do you know what that was for?

The little shaft sounds like the drive for the planter/fertilizer drive countershaft. Is there a sprocket on it?

I would really love to see some pictures of the tractor, especially the decals.

There is no sprocket, I'll get some pics when i put it back together. I tore the hydrolic box out last night so the tractor is in pieces right now.

Mornin Brett, Congrats on your new tractor! They are a nice handy tractor to have around. I just finished restoring my 49 Super, it wasnt in as a good of shape as yours but I only payed $700 for it. My serial # was FAA 275300 which puts it in about midyear production in 1949. The only thing I didnt rebuild on it was the transmission, mostly because it looked fine and really didnt need any work. If you want to take a look its in the tractor photo section. At that time I didnt have the headlights or the rear weights on it yet. I have the front weights, but didnt put them on. Good luck with whatever you decide to do !

Brett:
There is something I like about faded red, original paint and decals - as long as the tractor does not look "ragged out".
If you had 250001 - 250010, I would say you could place it in the "sacred" catagory. While you have a nice low number, it would not - in my opinion - be low enough to prevent restoring it. Others may feel differently.
One thing to keep in mind, you can always restore it later; but, you can never UN-restore it.

Thanks for the input mike. I am thinking maybe i will restore everything but the grill and hood, buy aftermarket hood and grill for the restoration and still have the origional. I"m not even sure if i can get a new grill
