What is a good parts store?

I read people keep mentioning Napa Auto Parts to get general stuff for their tractors, and to get work done on their heads, etc. But there is no Napa in my area. So, rather than just choose what is closest and hope for the best, I wanted to know if there is another prefered store I should lean towards, and why?

I think there is a Napa store in Tulare that does ag parts, also tractor supply has opened some new stores in Ca. Fresno usally has a equipment show the second week of Nov. and a lot of local parts and tractor dealers set up displays. The middle of Feb is the big farm show in Tulare. The antique farm groups set up informational booths at most shows, a good source of where to get parts. Allan

Go to Case-IH, or order from Carter and Grunewald, an IH dealer, or Messicks, there are other IH dealers that do mail order. Bates Corp, and Steel Wheel Ranch, and others are good for new aftermarket parts, and salvage parts. My opinion is to forget auto parts stores, even NAPA, for specific parts, they are ok for bearings, seals, etc, if there is someone there that understands what you want (good luck).

As to our local NAPA counter help...I am mystified as to how they find there way home at night, they can barely tell time. Anyone registering a pulse would be of more service. More than once I have had to simply go behind the counter when they are confused by the vast array of more than one similiar part and do their job for them. All this sans the help of scanning their parts book which they would have taken as a violation of space, but one which Ray Charles would surely find to be clear. They simply threw up their hands and gave up.

as i used to be in a parts store for many years my experience from the inside is "look for the old man, the old man that has been in the same store for 30+ years" that old man has knowledge, he's been up the road and over the mountain more than once, with everything from a ford tractor to a 18 wheeler and knows where stuff is at, and if he doesnt have it, he knows who does. most big name parts stores have acces to ag parts, they just have to know they do, some " corner stores" just have the simple stuff for the "weekend mechanic," this guy does something else for a living, but enjoys tinkering with his car on his days off, he doesnt get into the heavy stuff , so the store has a low inventory, and is manned teen or 20 something with a hardware store in his face, a ripped t shirt on, shorts, and his cap on backwards, and he is wondering why he doesnt make anymore than minumim wage, his knowledge is very basic and his experience is almost non exestant

Most any parts store is as good as the people working in it. I work for a Bumper to Bunper D C we have very good parts and we have junk it depends on it you want to pay for it or not.

CarQuest would be the next logical choice, but neither NAPA or CarQuest will be much good if you are not in a primarily agricultural area. If neither store has any demand for Farm tractor parts, they will not stock them, and they will not have any personnel that knows how to find those parts.

Well, luckily I am surrounded by farms.

I'll have to ask around and start shopping. First thing I need is a new solinoid to get the tractor started. The old one came loose from it's brackets.

My self I use an O'reillys part store but its also the only one close and over the past 20-25 years they have always done me right even if I did have to help teach a few what the books are for LOL. Ask around, I know where you live there has to be some hot rodders and they could tell you who is best, or of couse the farmer also

Solenoid? Must be a 12 volt conversion? If so, the solenoid you need is the same as used on most of the older Ford cars and trucks. It mounted on the inner fender. Should be easy to find, and relatively inexpensive.

The carquest where I buy my parts is located a half a block from the famed Lambeau football field. The had the oil filter and Spark plugs for my MD on the shelf. They actually stocked them. Not leftovers like some stores have.

I asked the local CarQuest store to get me a couple of interchange books for bearings and seal and I also have a parts book for my tractors so I look up my own parts numbers and have them get the parts.

I use a CarQuest here in Green Bay, WI. It really doesn't matter what store you use, you just have to find one that has a person behind the counter that has a little patience and will look for the parts that you need. Try to avoid places that have younger persons behind the counter. They just look up the part on the computer and then walk to the shelf to get it. Many of the parts you will need are in parts BOOKS not on the fancy new computer system that most stores have.
