My M is stuck in 4th gear. even in neutral. I can move the gearshift any where, but cant get it out of gear. In addition to that, the starter wont engage into the flywheel after this occeured. Any ideas?????

A worn pin can cause trouble also, but the most wear usually occurs on the bottom of the gearshift lever.

What gene said.

The starter problem is a completely separate issue that just happened to coincide with the tractor getting stuck in gear. The starter will need to be removed, and the drive ("Bendix drive") serviced or replaced entirely. It's probably a broken spring, but I would wager that the gear is pretty worn as well.

You are stuck in two gears. Drive pin out of shift lever and remove the shifter. Then look in the hole and you will see the rails. Using a large screwdriver you can line the one that is not lined up with the other two. Mite have to tie the clutch pedal down to remove any binding and if tractor is not on the level block the wheels so it cant roll away. You need the shifting lever built up a little to avoid this again. Dont get upset as this has happened thousands of times over the years.

The pin is roughly 3/8 or 7/16 dia. (anybody know the proper size?) and its about 2 inches long going off memory. It may or may not have little caps on either end of it depending on whether its been taken out before. Look at the base of your shifter where it goes into the platform, you"ll see the hole that the pin goes through. It runs sideways parallel with the axles. It can be driven either way although its either to go away from the steering post as that can get in the way. Press down firmly on the shift lever while driving the pin out as this will help line everything up and allow the pin to slide out easier.
