4 cyl. version of 301 6 cyl

I know there is a 4 cylinder version of this motor. same block but hack off 2 cylinders. What did it come in? Was it in a tractor or combine or was it more or less a stationary power plant. I heard it was used in a utility tractor like a 74 or 84 series tractor but not sure. Any help on where to look for this type of motor. thanks Ryan

C200 used in 544,574,674,2405B,2500A,2510B,2514B,2544,2500A and 8000 forklift. Internal engine parts are pretty much the same as C 301.

I may get canned, but I'm going to say that didn't happen. I think the 74's and for sure the 84's were mostly made in Great Britian. They were diesels like the 301. The 4 cylinder version of the 301, if it exists and assuming the same bore and stroke is about 200 cu in. The gas version of the 544 has a 200 cu in 4 cylinder engine, I don't think they are related, but I don't know the origin of the C200, either. The D301 is a successor to the C221 used in the 460, which in turn was derived from a 30's (I think) International truck engine. All of this can be corrected by someone else who may actually know what they are talking about.

As far as the truck engine you're referring to, the C-221, C-263, and C-301 are derivatives od the SD-220 and SD-240 truck engines which debuted in the 1950 L-series International trucks. These engines begat the BD-220, BD-240, and the BD-264 later in the '50's, and in the '60's became the BG-221, BG-241, and the BG-265. [The BD-308 truck engine wasn't related to these engines, but was based on the BLD-269 family of engines].

Yes the place I bought my C221 engine kit from said the truck version was the 220. I thought the guy said it was used in the late 30's, but I didn't think it would have been that "old" a design, which would have made it older than the H and M engines, not that it makes any difference. Interesting anyway.

OK, the two posts below were done as I was typing mine, I totally withdraw my statement and it is getting close to time for bed -- but at least I got the 200 cu in right, and now I know the origin of the 544 engine. Didn't know the 84 series had gas engines either -- think I better stick to the letter series.

CNKS- As far as the British Utilities that we have here in the U.S. go, the transmission/rear end were built at the factory in Doncaster, then shipped to Louisville, where the tractor was fully assembled using German diesels or U.S. gassers. I don't think a gas engine was an option on any of the 84 series Utilities. As far as the origin of the C-200 goes, it is based off of the C-221/C-263/C-291/C-301/D-236/D-282/D-301 family. There was also a D-166 four cylinder, a D-188 based off of the D-282, and I believe a C-175 based off of the C-263.

Thanks, I learn things everyday. I just didn't think IH ever chopped 2 cylinders off any of their engines, no reason they couldn't. As usual, whenever I assume something, I am wrong. In my last post I did not intend to include the 84's, as I wrote up the specs for a 784 for my former employer, in the late 70's and knew that they did not come with gas. As to the 263/175, you have also told me where the 175 came from. I get lost when I see gas engines in tractors that are not derivitives of the A/B/C..404, H..350, M..450, etc. Thanks--no more assumptions, foot in mouth doesn't taste very good, but sometimes people have to learn from their mistakes.

Yes, it's the C-200. The 544 tractor had it, along with a few of the British-built utility tractors like the 574. It was also sold to other companies for use as a power unit, in things such as large air compressors.

IH 544, 574 and 674 gas tractors. I believe it was used in some combines and several industrial applications; air compressors, forklifts, etc?
