front hitch for super m farmall

we are using our super m to launch a boat on a rather steep slope. it would be much safer and handier to have a ball hitch on the front.
has anyone heard of a front hitch or how to build one? i would appreciate hearing. thanks

You could manufacture something to mount to the frame side rails. Ifs it is that steep you may have issues backing up the hill to pull the boat out. A normal load is going to pull down and put weight on the back tires. This could make it a little light in the back, unless you have sufficient wheel weights on it. The other thing to consider is the brakes. Are they sufficient for what you are trying to do, especially if the back end gets a little light?

I certainly agree with Randy - especially about the brakes - especially in view of the fact it is a Super M and may have disc brakes which have not been serviced as they should, which is to say, in some cases, almost no brakes at all....!

Yup you can do it. IH had a plate that you bolt unto the lower bolster. Comes in handy for pushing loaded trailers into buildings.

Bob M and Wardner are on the track about the holes at each end of the lower bolster of a row crop (narrow front) Farmall. A piece of square tubing can be used on the very bottom, between the wheels. Above the wheels, at the top of the lower bolster, there are two threaded holes on the front side. The spacing of those holes exactly fits the spacing of the "drawbar extension plate" typically used when pulling a pto-powered implement. I've got one of the long ones for the M-SM models on the front of my M, and it's a charm for backing wagons into the barn. My SM has an shorter extension plate made for a Farmall B. You can get the same results with a piece of 1/2" or thicker plate drilled to fit. If you put a torch to it, and bend it down about 10-15 degrees, it works even better. For your boat, you can mount a ball hitch on the hole in the end of the plate.

I'm going to echo everything the other folks have already said about the brakes. SM brakes are good when they're in good shape. If they aren't in good shape, they are an accident waiting to happen!

Presuming you have a narrow front end, there's a pair of ears with 5/8"(?) tapped holes in them conveniently located at the very bottom of the lower bolster - ie. between the wheels and just below the axle centerline. Into these holes bolt a piece of square tubing or heavy steel strip long enough to extend a couple inches ahead of the front wheels. At the front end of the tubing/steel strip attach your trailer ball.

Incidentally that's sage advice by the others to have the brakes in perfect condition, also to have sufficient weight on the rear before attempting a launch. It can be VERY embarassing if the brakes or rear end weight are inadequate!!

And I always thought those two holes had something to do with a cultivator or specialized harvesting equipment. It seems hard to believe that IH would have considered the needs of a farmer trying to squeeze a forage wagon into a shed.

Did other manufacturers show the same concern?

One should also point out that there are two unused holes at the top of the lower bolster. Seems like all four holes might have been used together.

I don't think they make them. You must know someone with a drill press if you own a tractor. Three holes (maybe four if your are indecisive) and a piece of flat bar and you are done.

If that is not within your realm, email the seller in the eBay ad and have him make it. $30 plus shipping would be fair. Heck, email me and I will make it for that price. Send me a crude drawing of what you want. If that is not possible, send me your tire size, expected weight load of trailer tongue and trailer as a whole with load, and stem size of the trailer ball you will be using. The steel will be flat bar or rectangular tubing. depending on your answers.

Delmar - I kinda doubt it. The couple I've seen were homemade from whatever steel scrap happened to be around (ie. an old drawbar).
