We have a 450 farmall that we have historically had a hard time starting...I realize it sits around too much and this automatically causes issues (weak battery and old gas)...but here is the part maybe you can help with...even when used regularly, when it will sometimes start on it own it does not start when you have the starter button pushed in cranking it over...it starts when you let off of the starter button?...that is really odd to me? Our other tractors start with the starter button pushed in cranking. What could it be...items we are thinking are maybe...weak coil? points? plug wires? This tractor is 12 volt...were 450's 12 volt from factory? It runs fine once started, but half the time you have to pull it to start it...frustrating.
Appreciate the input!

I need your help. I see where you frequently have to pull your 450 Farmall to start it. I had some work done on my Farmall Super H last winter. It had no compression and I hired a mechanic to do what was necessary to make it run properly. Well, to make a long story short when I got the tractor back it still did not run right and I had to pull start it sometimes or leave it parked on a hill to pop the clutch to start the tractor.

I have tried to work with my mechanic to address the tractor issues and the mechanic is now saying that my pull starting the tractor had caused damage to the engine. I think he is crazy because we have always done this when we have not been able to start our tractors.

I would appreciate your thoughts regarding this. I am about to go to court over this matter and need additional information our support that this starting method would not cause harm to the tractor or engine. I would appreciate any information you could share or just your experience over time.

Thank you,

Dean Bott

I agree with the other posts and would sdd that battery cable size and condition is important with 12v as well. Size "0" cables will supply cranking amps for both ign, and starting. If it is turning over fast, I would check the Key output to coil in the start position by disconnecting the solenoid temporarily so it is not trying to start, then looking for voltage at the coil. IF you have a mag, have it rebuilt.

Had an H did same thing until I had the mag rebuilt. No problems since.

As others posted a weak spark that could be from several things. Also 450 gas were 6 volt then changed to 12 volt by IH as production went along. If your tractor is 12 volt the starter selonoid used a extra post for a wire to run to coil side of resistor. This put full 12 volts to coil when starter is engaged. This will help if not in place but if everthing is in good shape it should start without it.

Cnks maybe on the right track, but it could also be a starter that is drawing to many amps when turning the engine over and keeping it from have a good spark. I would do as he said frist then maybe have the starter checked if that doesn't fix the problem

Replace the switch. The switch sometimes actually cuts off the current. Before you release it all the way, the connection is restored and if you're lucky, it starts. Had a pickup that had that problem. Also clean all your cable connections. The gas has to be pretty old to cause a starting problem. You may need the other components you mentioned too, but the switch is the primary problem.
