just picked up a 1939 farmall a, but it is not the same as most a"s, it has solid front wheel hub castings, the gas tank bracket is made out of pipe, with a cast cut out in the tourqe tube. looks exactly like the tractor in the ad at the wisconsinhistory.org site... www.wisconsinhistory.org/whi/fullimage.asp?id=4284 have any ideas? thanks

I have a Serviceman's Guide for an A dated 9-8-39 and it shows an A with solid disk-style front wheels and a two spoke steering wheel, but the tank bracket looks about the same as the rest of them. It also states that the rear wheels are stamped steel, no mention of a cast right wheel. The torque tube in the artist's rendering looks almost square.

The picture I was looking at was a non-electric model, I just spotted another one with a starter, and it shows a tank bracket that appears to be made out of pipe, and the pipe angles forward as it goes up.

Is there a serial number on the tractor?

no serial #, also no # on right side of eng pad. also it has no holes for a serial plate in eather the seat bracket or the petal guard. the seat bracket has a small tag rivited to it telling how to ajust the seat...no date codes anywhere on any castings the only thing i could find was on the top of the trans case on the smooth pad where the rockshaft would bolt to it was stamped "39 A 11".....

I guess I'm mystified- where there holes for what might be rivets on the clutch housing? Probably painted over well before.

Any wierd parts numbers on the tractor?

no holes anywhere for a plate...the gas tank/brackets ane not typical production ones, and the torque tube is unusual, no machined top for the gas tank bracket, just a cast dimple with a threaded hole in it for the pipe style gas tank bracket..the gas tank has 2 clips that hold it to the pipe. then the pice goes into a cast bracket that bolts to the head..the rear wheel dishes are differnet,it's very differnet.....

What you see in the Farmall A poster on Wisconsin Historical Society web site is a wheel weight. IMHO.
Cannot comment on the gas tank support.
Hope Guy will shed some light on this.
