I knew it!

Guess my trouble is, I remember these red tractors when they were brand spankin' new and I remember how they acted. They just did not have that "gear noise" in the rear end nor did they have the vibration under your feet.

Stopped in at the red shop today to see how my 966 was doing.

Two bad carrier bearings, a bad forward pinion bearing and of course it now needs a ring gear and pinion because they dropped and got chewed up from being out of preload. If I didn't know better, I'd have thought someone used the tractor for a puller. Tractor has worked real hard in it's lifetime.

Good news is that the bulls/axle bearings are like new, the hitch piston only needs resealed and the transmission lock only needs adjusted correctly.

Yep, it's gonna be expensive to a degree, but now I know the tractor is totally new bumper to bumper. And, total money I've spent on this tractor still wouldn't even pay the interest on a new one.

I'm glad I took it to town. :>)

Allan, I am going to dogpile on just a little here. You have spent a small fortune getting you ol'girl going again, and now it needs some rearend work. OK it will cost an additional + - $3500 or so. You now KNOW everything about this tractor! It shouldn't need much of anything else, Unless something gernaides about it!
Also the cost of a New replacement is way tooooo far out of line. Also these older tractors have things about them that the new will NEVER have! Peace of mind knowing all is correct inside, Character, Toughness History thoses things that Do Not Pencil out on paper.
Kinda like my ol girl, When I replaced my Clutch, P.P., and TA 5 yrs ago the mechanics were inside the rearend fixing the lower lift arm seals too. They check it out ad said all was in good shape, nothin out of the ordinary, no broken teeth on any gears at that time.
So haveing that kind of info at some point in time give you the pease knowing all is good or fi someother problem arises you can make the best determination onb what to do next.
I know, writeing thoses big checks is no fun, but now it is ready for anything you throw at her!
Later,
John A.

Sounds more like a 8000+ hour tractor. Maybe that tach has been swapped at sometime in the past or someone really pounded it back and forth with the loader that was on it? If I remeber it had around 4500 Hrs? A 966 should not have bad carrier bearings with that low hours. Good thing you had it tore down before it grenaded and showered the rest of the trans with peices of metal. Shows how hard it is to diagnose gear noises over the internet. LOL

It has certainly had the guts yanked out of it, that's for sure.

The drawbar hole is egg shaped and the 3-point doesn't appear to have been used much.

Think the tach is original. Worked for two days on that lens to get it clear again. :>)

You're right about the loader tho; think it spent half it's life doing chore duty. :>(

Allan

Why do you think it was a puller?

I use to pull my 1086 set at about 200 HP.

Last pull was in about 1990 started in 1979.

Still have not touched the engine and put a TA in at 4000 hrs but I used as a brake for the first 4 years I owned it till I learned not to do that.

Has over 8000 hrs now.

Oh I did put a clutch in at about 7000 hrs. I blame that on the loader its carried since 99 when we sold dads loader tractor when he died.

Just don't see how pullin them hurts them unless you get over 250 hp? Gary

It is always a good feeling when the ears still work good enough to be able to pick up a potential HUGE problem before it gets to bad. Hope the bill isn't to high. At least it will be all new now.

Yep, that's the only way to look at it. Repair bill may seem high, but just go and price out a new tractor of the same class as the 966.
