Hey y'all,

This is my first time on this site and I like it alot!! Anyhow I just inherited a Cub that I plan on using for my full time cultivating tractor next year (about 12 acres of tobacco) My question is it has a hand crank, as well as a electric starter and battery box(obviously) My question is how do I know if I have a 12v system or a 6v? I have jumped it off my truck (probably not smart not knowing)

Any Information would be a great help.

Sorry for my ignorance, and thanks in advance

Count the number caps on the top of the battery and multiply by two.

12 volt positive ground.
6 volt negative ground.

If it has a mag it would have been 6 volt pos grd. If you have the serial number someone could give the year and voltage.

Does it run without a battery? Must have a Mag if it does. I guess the thing to do, not knowing much about what you have, is to measure the battery terminals and see if you get about 13 volts or about 7 volts.

Yep, it will run with no battery. If I take a voltmeter to the battery cable ends and get a reading that should do it? So simple I am kinda embarrased I didn't think of that. Thanks alot!

If its a pre 60s cub it would have been 6 volts when new. Now it could have been upgraded to 12 volts. If it has a genny then it most likely will be 6 volts but if it has an alternato then it will most likey be 12 volts. I guessing you know the differance in an alternator and a genny

Put the volt meter to the battery ends only with the ends hooked to the battery. If you shoot the volts circuit directly through the volt meter, instead of reading it through the battery, you will fry your volt meter. Don't ask me how I know!!!!!

City-Boy, (please do not read flame in this) I do not understand how a volt meter can be burnt up connecting it at or near the battery (with the terminals connected to the posts, or not. Analog volt meters set on 2volt scale might be wounded, self ranging meters are pretty safe around a battery, even connected backwards. John T jump in here. I need to figure this out. JimN

A 6 volt cub generator with no load (battery) will put out around 34 to 36 vo9lts at mid engine speed. It also has a lot of electrical noise.
