I send my best wishes to all veterans on this special day.

I have a nephew who started calling me when he was a young teenager each Veteran's Day to thank me for my service. (I'm a Viet-Nam Era vet who happened to go to the Republic of Korea.) I thought his calls were pretty special. He's now in college and about to go to Texas for his basic training in the Wisconsin Air Force Reserve.

Joshua's calls always meant a lot to me. So I, too, say thanks to all you veterans. I'm interested in where you served.

David

I never served but always have a lump in my throat at the thought of those who have. I am an avid reader of all things military and especially enjoy WWII history , as I grew up in the after shadow of the war, when nobody talked about anything else.

This country's sacrifices have been enormous.
But what really gets me is how our GI's are just ordinary guys, not elitist military school guys, like in Germany....yet they kicked butt all over the word. Don't forget the industrial workers who stayed home and gave them the equipment. This country produced 100,000 tanks in WWII and about 300,000 aircraft..no other country could do that and fight two wars at the same time! When WWII broke out we only had 200,000 men in the military. It is nothing short of a miracle that we resurrected the military, fought two wars at the same time and won. It is a lesson we never forgot, although our present military could still use some beefing up. I know the young people don't like it and neither do the Moms and Dads, but, let's face it folks, we need the draft again.

As for the A Bomb, my only regret is we did not have more of them at the time. The Japanese are the most barbarous people on the face of the earth and stupid us, we buy their cars. The young people over there still hate us. The South Koreans won't let us sell American cars there, yet we buy their Hyundais. Wake up America.

I don't mean to forget Vets of all wars, Korea, Viet Nam and the superb soldiers now fighting for us in Iraq. A Toast to the American GI...the most motivated, the most can-do, individual discision maker and the most adaptable and inventive soldier in the world.

By the way, my Uncle flew Sabre Jets in Korea..knocked Migs out of the sky, but crashed landed several times, screwed up his circulation and he eventually had to have both legs amputated...sunk into a deep depression and died a broken man. Any of you guys disabled out there, please don't live that way. Get help and pick yourselves up. We are all proud of you and want you to perk up and live your life. You deserve it. Gee, a tear coming to my eye. I had better stop. God Bless the USA

My Uncle Mike was a p-47 fighter pilot in WW2 ( Europe).Lost his hearing flying military jets after the war. Needed an operation to get it back, but without an aide, still deaf. I still enjoy talking to him about military history. What a great generation. Thanks to all vets.

I served in the USAF for over 26 years. I was stationed in NJ, CO, OK, two bases in Viet Nam, MO, IL, HI, and AL. Also,I spent a total of seven years fighting the political battles in the Pentagon. I am glad it is behind me. I now enjoy just working with my red tractors.

Yes, a salute to all veterans. Went up to to the local Vietnam Veterans Memorial this morning as usually do. I appreciate it being there. Was in-country in 1970. Army ROTC, Fort Belvoir, Bien Hoa in short. Best wishes,
Mel

I got drafted during the Vietnam conflict, in 1965. Took my basic in FT Devens, Mass. In the summer of 1966 we went over to Nam as a whole unit, all of the brigade. Went over on an old WWII troop boat, took us about a month to get there. We left Boston Harbor, went down to Panama Canal, and up to California. Stoped by Long Beach for supplies for one day, then across the Pacific Ocean. Last week, on November the 4th was forty years ago that I got the lucky hit. Got wounded. That was some experience for me. Happy Veteran's Day to all the vets. George

I spent 20 years in the U.S. Coast Guard. I joined in 1978 and did boot camp in Alameda, Ca. Was stationed on the Cutter Westwind out of Milwaukee, WI, where we broke ice in the Great Lakes in the winter, and in the Arctic in the summer. Trained in Yorktown, VA, then tranferred to San Francisco where I did search and rescue, and law enforcement on the bay. I spent a month in Marathon, FL, chasing Cuban refugees during the Marielle Boatlift. Transferred to Lake Tahoe for more SAR and LE. Transferred to Port Clarence, Alaska, 80 miles north of Nome where I baby-sat a Loran transmitter for a year. Transferred to Portland, OR, for more SAR and LE duty. Tranferred to Astoria, OR to ride herd on the Columbia River bar. Tranferred to the Cutter Active out of Port Angeles, WA, where we patrolled from Alaska to Mexico. Transferred to the Cutter Polar Sea out of Seattle, WA, where we made a science voyage to the North Pole, then continued down the eastern seaboard, stopping in Halifax and Boston, then Panama and back to Seattle. Transferred to Port Angeles, WA and retired.

My Grand Father served in WW I, Had an Uncle crippled in WW II clearing an air field when a tree fell on him.

I remember when I was young my father talking about his service in WW II and Korea. I had heard it so many times that I tried to sneak out of the room when the war stories came up. Now that I am older I appreciate more and more the service that the men gave to our country.

My fathers service..... ...

Inducted into the Army June 8, 1942. Trained at Camp Wallace, Galveston and Tyler, TX and Camp Davis, NC. Assigned to anti-aircraft unit at Ft. Bliss, El Paso, TX. Served in South Pacific, Australia, Dutch, New Guinea, Philippines, and Japan; involved in Invasion of Biak Island. Awarded two Bronze Stars and Good Conduct Medal. Discharged December, 31, 1945 as first sergeant.

Tour of the Pacific: 227th AAA
Landed in Sydney Australia then to the to the Islands of New Guina, landing first at Millany Bay then to Port Morsbey and then to Good Enough Island then to Fintchauen then to Herlandia then to Biak Island then to the Philippines then to Japan and then back to San Francisco, California.

Recalled for the Korean War 1st January 1949 and was stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, as a communication officer. Discharged 6th April 1953 with the rank of Master Seargent.

Last year my Mother layed the wreath at the local service here in town and my son played taps.

Thanks to all the people that serve and have served.

Two of my Mother's brothers serviced during the Korean conflict. They both died about 3 months apart from each other, 4 years ago. Uncle Orlin was a Marine that served in California. Uncle Gerald came back home after being hit by a grenade at Chosin Basin(?). As I sat and listened to his friend, who served with him, I realized that I had lost an opportunity to really know one of the greatest men in my live. Aunt Della said he had three welders in the garage and that no-one in the neighborhood threw anything away until Uncle Gerald looked at it. Both men were quiet and when they said anything at all, people listened. A hospice nurse had noticed a lump in Uncle Gerald's arm and was going to call the Dr.. No need to, he said. It's just a grenade fragment. I served during peace time, I feel kinda small in comparision what other have done. I think of my Uncles on this DAY. Thank you all

I was drafted during the Korean War in 1953. The Peace Treaty was signed when I finished basic training and only one man from our platoon went to Korea. I volunteered to go Airborne and spent my time at Ft Bragg NC. My brother had joined the Air Force in 1951 to escape the draft after we finished high school. We both had turn down deferments for the farm. I got married in 1953 too. Our daughter was born at Ft Bragg and she is a Nurse Practitioner. Hal

I was never in the military. I thought about it, but with my speech impediment, I didnt think it was the right place for me (In fact, I still havent found a career I can live with besides factory work, =( ). Anyways, I'd really like to thank all of you vets for doing what I couldn't do. From the ones who were/are very eager to be in the military, to the ones drafted but still gave their all for this country.
I'd especially like to Thank the ones who were active in areas that they were against, from Iraq, to Vietnam. While our country is the best on earth, we cannot let it blind us from our mistakes. We need to learn from our mistakes.
It takes a real man to go into the military, especially in times of war, specifically in a war one may not agree with. I'm not so sure I could be one of those.
I'm not saying that we shouldnt be in Iraq, this is not the place to debate that.
What I am saying is Thank You All. The Wifes, the children, those who send letters to military personnel to boost moral, those who have lost ones in the military, those who are still suffering after affects.
The military is not only one of the most dangerous jobs, it can have dramatic emotional effects on people and we must support them in their time of need. After All, they've been through things I dont even want to begin to think about. THANKS!!

Yes, thank you veterans! My two uncles served in WWII, I believe. My sister-the smartest of my parents two offspring-is a Colonel, Registered Nurse, continuing to serve in the Air Force since 1981. Reminds me of a stirring rendition of the "Pledge of Allegiance" done by the late Red Skelton. Enjoy the weekend. We have snow in SW Wisconsin -YIPPIIIEEEE! I love it.
